One thing I certainly didn't expect, was not only being invited to Ife and Joseph's marriage but also being selected as one of her bridesmaids since Matteo is one of Joseph's close friends. I hadn't met her yet and stood with rising anticipation in front of her changing room.

The door was opened by another bridesmaid and then my gaze fell onto her.
Ife. She had black Bantu knots with lilac high lights, matching the glitter on her princess wedding dress. The snow-white color perfectly contrasted her black skin.

"Oh my...Lara, is this you?", she covered her smile with the palm of her hand and rushed to me, pulling me into a hug. "You look astonishing..." I heaved, forgetting how to breathe.
"Awwww, thank you, baby!"

Valentina was one of the bridesmaids and I was thankful for her presence. She explained, that Ifef didn't want me to sit alone and was sure she'd like me since I was Matteo's girlfriend and Joseph's best friend. Therefore she declared me as one of her bridesmaids, before getting to know me.

Some minutes later before the guests arrived and the bridesmaids from both parties stood on the altar, some misunderstandings occurred. Joseph stomped into the church, opening the lumbering door fleetly.

"I should've planned this day better...Ren do you have your speech ready?" He cracked his fingers, corrected his collar, and licked his lips. "Me?!" Ren perused him.

"Are you fucking me, boy? You should've written a speech for us!"

"Oh yeah, someone else did."
Leon giggled uncannily.
"OH HELL NAH, MOTHERFUCKER!"

Joseph stressed out as the first guests were led into the church. The ceremony neared.

"Just leave out the evil remarks, okay...?"
Leon patted his shoulder. "You know me."
"That's why I'm concerned."

Everybody took their seats and the pastor arrived, opening the ceremony. I caught a glimpse of Matteo analyzing me.

I shot him a quick smile and the corners of his mouth curled up. My palms got sweaty, even after one year of a relationship. Although I'm not nervous around him. It's just his eyes, which made me melt with every eye contact we had.

Ife strolled with her father and a bouquet to Joseph teary-eyed. He blinked his away, acting tough. Joseph kissed her forehead, covered by a light purple veil.

"They are everything I strive to be.", Valentina whispered. I couldn't agree more, yet being sort of terrorized under the concept of getting married as well, doesn't seem that unreal nowadays.

I'm 23, financially stable, and have a boyfriend who probably has the same view.

What if my husband will be Matteo...?

Leon got ordered to read out his speech and I noticed how the couple stiffened.

"Hello everybody, thanks to Ren for letting me be in the place of writing a speech for a beautiful woman, I should've married. Ife, don't worry, you're beautiful too."
He garnered laughter from the crowd. Joseph cracked up a bit too.

"Joseph and I have been buddies since high school. The boy who always skipped classes with me, sorry Mama Morel, got black-out drunk with me, carried me through dark times, and touched my asscheeks when I asked him to. Joseph my man you did that, Ife is a gorgeous woman, outside and inside. Joseph my man, you did that. Both virgins, I hope you caught that, Father.", Leon looked at the priest and he nodded.

"The moment I saw Joseph and Ife together, I knew they'd be made for each other. Their souls are tied with or without this ceremony. I'm proud of both of you."

The audience applauded and the pastor continued: "Joseph Morel, do you want to take Ife Diphetogo as your wife?"
Joseph gently put the diamond ring on her finger. "Yes, I do. In every lifetime."

"Ife Diphetogo, do you want to take Joseph Morel as your husband?"
"Yes, yes I do." She copied his movement.
"Now you're allowed to kiss your wife, Mister Morel."

Joseph instantly tugged the veil over her head, pulling her into a deep kiss.

The fancy wedding avenue matched the colors of Ife's wedding dress and her personality. Delightful, shiny, classy and calm.

I had a small talk with Joseph while pouring some champagne into my flute. "So, you're the lady who won Teo's heart?"

"I didn't win it, there was no competition."
He grinned.
"So you stole it?"
"Exactly."
"Matteo is into thieves...interesting. Do you plan on marrying him anytime soon? I mean, you have been together with him for quite a long time."

Ife hugged me from the side and hummed. "I pray she does."

"My mother already predetermined him as her son-in-law. Not you guys as well...Let me live my life first..."

"Let's see, I still need to throw the bouquet!", she grabbed my hand and assigned me and the other women nearby to align in three rows.

"The girl who catches marries next!"
She gyrated around and threw it without a counting into the crowd.

Suddenly Valentina caught it and forced the flowers unnoticeably by the others into my hand to yank it upwards.

"Teo, do your job!", she shouted to her brother and my cheeks warmed up.

My boyfriend eyed me, not knowing what to do. I thanked Ife for the bouquet with a cheek kiss and met with Matteo several minutes after, remote from the others.

"Don't stress out. I hate proposals at weddings." My heart felt less heavy, although it ached at the same time.

"So you're not planning on marrying me someday?"
Oh fuck, I hate myself, when revealing too much. I would've hated him for proposing at Ife's marriage, but also be mad that he didn't do it earlier.

Get a grip, Lara. You don't even want to marry him.

Matteo is the type of guy to straight up buy you a ring, even after just mentioning you'd be interested in marriage. The little girl inside of me always dreamed of marrying, the grown-up me, sees too many difficulties.

"You're indicating, I should put a ring on your finger? Do I understand that right?"
"No! You know I'm not a woman you should marry! I won't stay at home for the next few years, cooking every day and looking after children. I don't want to invest all of my time into a son, who'll treat me like dirt under his nail and take drugs every chance he gets to."

His brows furrowed. "I was talking about a ring. Not being a father by the age of 24. What would change after I declare you as my wife?"

"I don't want to want to sign a contract where I sign my name away to become Lara Díaz. I have a reputation to fix with my current last name."
"Say that again." He was suddenly very attentive with an auspicious smile.
"What? That I have a reputation to fix or the name?"
"The name."
"Lara Díaz?"

"Yes, I could get used to that."

Goosebumps occurred on my arms along with an incomprehensible knot in my stomach. The same feeling as a roller coaster. The mix of fun, fear, adrenaline rush, and worst of all, ending up loving it.

"I connect marriage with cheating."
"Cheat on you with what?"
"A woman who can offer you something better than I do."

He laid his hands around my hips.
"Be better in making me feel in a way nobody else did? I don't think so. I also don't believe After I looked at you for the first time, everybody else looked unattractive to me. You're the woman I need in my life, nobody else. Maybe it's hard to believe since there wasn't a guy who wanted to be in a serious relationship with you. Lara, I want to be the man you desire until you're lying in your grave and even then I want to rest next to you."
