There are some misconceptions people find out about essays such as writing so many pages, but that's not the case every time.
The purpose of an essay is to show your understanding, views or opinions in response to an essay question, and to persuade the reader that what you are writing makes sense and can be backed up with evidence. In a literature essay, this usually means looking closely at a text (for example, a novel, poem or play) and responding to it with your ideas.
When writing an essay it is compulsory to answer the question and not just write everything you know about a specific topic. Part of the secret to writing a good essay is to carefully choose what is interesting and relevant so you can get more marks in your history, Religious studies and English exams.

2B. English literature
Some exam questions in English will ask you a question that might be worth at least 12 marks/points.
They will give you an extract from a novel to read, ask retrieval questions and ask you a question worth 12 marks. This means you will write 3 paragraphs.
Example: One model paragraph I did.
How does Michael Morpurgo present war in this extract from War Horse? [4 marks for one paragraph]
In this extract, Morpurgo presents war as brutal. This is evidently seen in the quote, ' All around me when men cried and fell to the ground and horses reared and screamed ' Here, the readers understand that the soldiers and horses are getting hurt and dying. Furthermore, the use of the verb ' screamed ' could suggest how horses suffer so much pain when fighting in the cavalry. As a reader, we are made to feel sympathetic on the horses about what they had to go through. Morpurgo intends to tell us that not only humans suffer from pain and horses have human-like feelings even though they are animals and he shows the reality of war unlike what propagandas show.
