No, not Ellie...

My heart begins to pound but Mel's wide eyes prompt me to act. I need to prioritise her and the baby so I quickly help her up, guiding her quite hastily to a room I noticed earlier.

"No, no, what about Owen?" She whispers, her voice wavering ever so slightly as she tries to resist my hold but I only tighten my grip on her arm.

"You're my priority. Once I get you safe, I'm going to him, okay?" I whisper back, my eyes glued onto the door I plan to get us inside. The door is jammed but I shove it open with my shoulder and guide Mel inside while trying to be as quiet as possible.

The storage room's stench immediately hits me, and it's incredibly dark when I close the door and prop a spare chair under the handle. Mel's breathing starts to speed up a little and I turn back to face her, holding her shoulders as I try to make eye contact through the dark. "He'll be okay. Mel. Hey, think about the baby."

Mel nods, her hand slowly cupping her belly as she tries to calm her breathing.

"Let's get you sat," I murmur as I guide her to a table and help her sit, just to give her some support. With her focused on her breath, I walk back over to the door and press my ear against it.

Come on, let me hear if it's you or not, Ellie.

There's a distant light thud before soft footsteps rapidly enter the main aquarium room. Whoever it is, they're getting closer. Fuck, you'll be fine, Y/N. You'll be fine.

After a few dreadful moments of silence, I rub my back as it's beginning to ache. Then there's a voice.

"Ellie!" Shit, I knew it was Ellie. The voice is muffled because of the door but it belongs to a male this time. My shoulders tense up rigidly.

Mel's eyes lock with mine as we listen in, staying as quiet as humanly possible. Aside from their voices, I can even hear my own blood rushing through my ears.

"Ellie, what ... come on ... go."

"Abby..."

"We can't ... Look ... Y/N ... already dead ..."

Please tell me Mel didn't hear my name.

"I need ... so close ..."

"... prioritise the baby ... please ..."

And then silence comes as the footsteps fade.

"Who was that?" Mel whispers, visibly shaken as her mind focuses on Owen. Having seen Ellie brutally kill, I can't help but already imagine Owen's dead body and lifeless eyes.

I can't admit that I know these people and I can only pray Mel didn't hear them say my name. Instead, I inhale sharply and prepare to move the chair away from the door. "I'll find out. You stay here, okay?"

Mel's eyes widen as she tries to slide off the table to get back on her feet. "You can't possibly tell me to do that. I need to know if Owen's-"

"I'll check," I interrupt her, growing a little frustrated from my own anxiety. I didn't mean to snap in that tone which has stunned her into silence but I can't bring myself to apologise either.

I slowly open the door and slip out, looking around for a clear coast. It seems empty and Ellie is definitely gone now. I recognised one of the voices to be Jesse's but I couldn't figure out the southern one. It was probably somebody new.

It's deathly silent as I grip my gun tightly in my hand and scan my surroundings. As unfamiliar as this aquarium is, the layout is pretty simple.

Entering a room I have not been in before, I notice the dog's body in the corner of the room, its stomach heaving quite heavily as quiet whimpers escape it.
