A sharp odour of burnt coffee hits me as I reluctantly open my eyes, my arms lazily outstretched beside me. My shoulder aches as I've been lying on my side to sleep, and surprisingly enough, I feel refreshed. I wonder how long I've slept for.

With a small groan, I stretch my limbs and relish in the feeling of my muscles relaxing. As I come to, I notice a blanket tightly tucking me in. My eyes blink rapidly and a thought crosses my mind.

I swear I saw this blanket on Abby last night.

Shaking the thought aside, I sit up and brush my hair out of my face before untangling myself from the blanket. I toss it to the side and a wave of cooler air hits me, causing me to let out a gentle groan.

Everyone seems to have already woken up ages ago as their sleeping areas are neat and organised, though Abby's and Lev's belongings are gone. Wonder where they've headed.

I slowly stand from the floor and stretch my arms upwards, letting out a yawn. The bright sun filters in through the small window at the top of the wall, brightening up the room to the point where I notice thick layers of dust on some shelves, and some worn away corners.

It only proves how long it's been since... well, Leanne.

I lean down to grab a spare hair tie from my bag and I put my hair up before I leave the small shed, heading out to find Mel.

Once I reach outside, I spot Mel and Alice sitting by the bank, sharing something between themselves. My feet take me towards them and it's Alice who notices my presence first, lifting her head and letting out a soft bark.

A smile tugs on my lips as I sit on the other side of her, reaching out to scratch behind her ears to which her tongue lolls out happily.

Mel looks over at me and smiles... sadly. "Hey." Her voice is quiet and she returns her gaze back to the body of water in front of us. Owen.

That all too familiar wave of guilt hits me and suddenly the corners of my lips feel too heavy. My hands slowly stop scratching at Alice's fur and she lets out a small whine.

Fuck, I could've-

I should've, but I prioritised the wrong thing and I messed up. And now he's dead.

Fuck.

I pull my hands away from Alice and stare at the ground, watching as the blades of grass sway in the wind.

"M'sorry..." I mumble after a moment. There's a small break of composure in Mel's expression but she doesn't say anything.

Abby probably hates me too, more than ever now.

With Mel staying silent, I try to focus on petting Alice again as a distraction. It's silent save for the whistling of the wind which prompts goosebumps to rise on my arms. Alice snuggles further into my side.

"Did you eat already?" I ask Mel quietly, looking at her again.

She continues to stare out at the dark river and I notice the slight tremor in her lip. Her head lowers as she slowly hands me an unopened packet of biscuits. "Abby gave me these but I can't bring myself to eat. She wanted you to sleep in."

Confusion paints over my face as I slowly take them from her, lifting them in the air as soon as Alice shows interest. "She wanted me to sleep in?" I ask, the statement making my stomach tingle. My hands work on opening the pack.

"Yeah," she mumbles, sighing deeply as she brings her gaze back to me. Though I'm not close with Mel at all, I think we might be getting along peacefully.

If Abby wanted me to sleep in, maybe she cares?

No, that'd be a stretch. Seriously? Don't give yourself hope, Y/N.
