"Yeah, no, she needs to go to the ER." The nurse said, holding a small patch of gauze to the back of Julie's head. "Seriously??" Flynn exclaimed from her spot next to Julie, holding her hand. I was leaning against the wall, biting my nails. The nurse looked unamused at the number of teenagers she had crammed in her small office right now, Alex and Reggie were sitting against the wall to my other side.
"Seriously." The nurse frowned at Flynn, turning to grab a pack from a nearby drawer, squeezing it until it popped, giving it a couple of shakes. "Here's an ice pack for the drive. Do you need me to call an ambulance?" She placed the pack on top of the gauze on Julie's head, making her wince a little. "She probably has a concussion. Don't let her fall asleep until a doctor looks her over." Flynn nodded and took over, holding the ice pack on Julie's head. "We'll drive her, just if you can sign us all out." I asked, standing up from my place against the wall. The nurse sighed, rolling her eyes. "Fine, get going. She needs to be seen asap." With that, the nurse left the room.
I gathered Julie up in my arms again, and we left to head towards the car, I walked super slowly, trying to keep my steps even so I don't jostle Jules. Flynn slid into the back seat, helping me put Jules in the middle and buckle her in. Alex took the seat on her other side, Ray still only really wanted me to drive, something that up until now I was stoked about. But now, all I wanted to do was sit back there with Jules and hold her. Reg threw himself into the passenger seat as I sat behind the wheel. He started fiddling with the radio as soon as I turned the car on, I turned the radio off immediately. "Dude, Jules has a head injury!" I snapped at him, looking in the rearview mirror to see Julie leaned against Flynn's shoulder, holding the ice to her head.
Flynn passed her phone up to us, already set with the directions to the hospital. The drive to the hospital was the one of the worst things I've done. I was nauseous from the anxiety, exhausted from the rage and buzzing with the same anxiety that was making me sick. Every time I took a turn, I looked in the mirror to make sure Julie was okay.
45 mins later, and we were waiting in a room, Julie had been taken back into somewhere else to get some kind of scan or something. Flynn was trying to keep Reggie from breaking the hospital bed. He kept raising it and lowering it with the remote, putting it into weird angles as he laid on it and laughed like a maniac. Alex was in one of the chairs, his knees bouncing as he drummed on the tops of his thighs, something he's always done when he's anxious. That or pacing, but I was taking up the little walking space with my own pacing.
"I gotta go pace somewhere else, Alex's knees are making me nervous." I turned around and left out the half open door, heading down the hallway. "God, this sucks. This is so stupid. Stupid Nick. Can't believe this. Didn't even get through my first day." I grumbled to myself, kicking the vending machine I came up to, making me swear under my breath. Maybe I'm hangry, rifling through my pocket for my wallet I yanked out some crumpled bills and set to getting myself some Doritos from one machine and a Mountain Dew from the drink machine beside it.
Stuffing my face with chips and guzzling down some soda, I did calm down just a little bit. Good ole comfort junk food, always works. Crumpling my trash, I tossed it into the can nearby and made my way back to the room we were all waiting for Julie in. Julie was lying in the bed when I came back into the room, Reggie in the chair next to Alex, his arms crossed and pouting at getting kicked out of his new toy.
A bandage wrapped around her head, probably holding new gauze to the gash at the back of it. Julie was squinting at the light overhead as I came in, like it was bothering her. Flicking the light off, I walked over to the side of her bed. "How are you feeling, Jules?" I asked in a hushed tone, gently putting my hand on the back of hers. "My head really hurts." She groaned, giving me a pained smile.
