Kumagawa sat beside Ainz. Or, to be more accurate, he sat on the arm of Ainz's throne, leaning on the Overlord's shoulder as he watched the events displayed on the Mirror of Remote Viewing.
Usually, a Guardian would have commented how disrespectful such a thing is. But because Ainz hasn't voices out any discomfort, as well as being way too used to the minus's eccentricies, none of them said anything.
Kumagawa:[Hm, he's quite in a pickle now. That Elder Lich isn't gonna last much longer.]
True to his words, the lizardmen weilding the blade of ice emerged from between the snake heads of the hydra not long after. Seeing his Fireball wasn't enough, the Elder Lich casted lighting.
However, Zaryusu's brother quickly intervenes chanted a Martial Art that momentarily increased his resistance, making him able to shrug off the attack. Zaryusu then continued onwards with his comarades behind him.
But the Elder Lich didn't give up either. It quickly summoned skeleton knights to help it in battle.
The other lizardmen emgaged thise skeletons as they attacked, giving Zaryusu the chance to advance. However, the difference in number was still to be considered.
At the Elder Lich's command two skeletons flanked Zaryusu from both sides, their swords ready to cut him away. However, someone cast a spell from behind, mud moving at the command of magic and eating away at the two skeletons before they could harm Zaryusu.
But the fact still was that Zaryusu was a Warrior, while the Elder Lich was a Magic Caster. The difference of how their classes fought was still a great obstacle.
When Zaryusu got dangerously close to the Elder Lich didn't hesitate. The undead quickly cast a spell typical of his class.
Elder Lich:Scare!
Zaryusu stopped dead in his tracks, a horrible sense of fear gripping at him. All he could see was darkness.
Zaryusu:Hngh...Lion's Heart!
But Zaryusu had a counter for that. With the effect of the Martial Art, his resolve was reinforced so that he could nullify the effect of the skill.
The Elder Lich pointed it's finger at Zaryusu, lighting shooting out. While Zaryusu manged to dodge, the lighting hit a white lizardwoman behind him, which had considerably angered him.
Zaryusu gripped the magic item in his hand, swinging the ice blade at the Elder Lich. However, the floating undead creature proved itself faster than he anticipated.
Elder Lich: You're too slow!
Zaryusu:You let a Warrior get close to you, Magic Caster! Don't think you can use your magic now!
Elder Lich:Don't understimate me!
True to it's words, when Zaryusu tried to take another swing at the Elder Lich magic circles activated around him, Magic Arrows piercing through Zaryusu's body not a moment after. The lizardman let out a pained grunt, but still continued onward.
Zaryusu:This much is...Nothing!
Fourtunately for Zaryusu, his struggle didn't last long. That same lizardwoman that was hit by lightning managed to cast a healing spell on Zaryusu before passing out.
Elder Lich:Accursed lizardmen!
Zaryusu: You're not fighting just me. Shasuryu, Crush, Rororo...For their sake, I can not lose!
The Elder Lich cast a Fireball, the ball of heat in it's hand ready to unleash it's power. Zaryusu was confused by this, the Elder Lich would be harmed by the attack as well if it fired it so close.
Than the relization hit him. The Elder Lich was aiming for his uncounscious camarades!
Then the Fireball was shot forward. Having no time to lose, Zaryusu acted quickly.
Zaryusu:Ice burst!
Hitting the ice blade against the ground, a wave of freezing temperature was unleashed. The attacks coldness was strong enough to completly nullify the Fireball.
However, the Elder Lich wasn't worried. While the lizardman possesed a sword wiyh ice magic Zaryusu had no specific resistance against cold, meaning the temperature would affect him.
However, it seems that the Elder Lich understimated Zaryusu's pure grit. The lizardman was already above the undead creature, stabbing the ice blade in the side of the Elder Lich's skull.
Elder Lich:Graagh...Die, lizardman!
The Elder Lich's hand shot forward, griping Zaryusu's neck. The lizardman stumbled, his air supply being cut off.
Magic Casters weren't physical combatants, that was true. However, the Elder Lich still had a considerable amount of strenght because of it's undead status.
But at the last moment, Zaryusu summoned all the strenght he had remaining. He stabbed the blade further, the skull of the Elder Lich beggining to freeze, ending it's undead existence.
Elder Lich:This can't be...Happening...Lord Ain...Z...Please...Forgive...Me...
From the throne room Ainz saw all that happened. He let out a hum at the Elder Lich's last words.
Ainz:There is no need to ask for forgiveness. You fought well.
However, this solemn moment was cut short by crunching noises. Ainz turned his head, surprise held in his empty eye sockets.
Ainz:...Where did you get popcorn from?
Kumagawa:[Hm? Well, such a show must be enjoyed with snacks! Ah...By the way...]
Ainz:It ended, it's too late to make bet.
Kumagawa:[Ah...Once again I couldn't win.]
Ainz:Hm, Cocytus should be reyurning soon.
Albedo:Before that, I think we must decide a proper punishment for Shalltear.
Shalltear:I agree, Ainz-sama.
Ainz:Hm...Come here.
Shalltear listened to his command, kneeling in one knee before him. Her surprise was great once she felt her head being pet.
Shalltear:...Ainz-sama...
Ainz:That was a mistake on my part...
Kumagawa:[That's no good, Ainz-chan.]
Ainz stopped his speech, curious about what the young men was gonna say. He turned his head to Kumagawa, beckoning him to continue.
Kumagawa:[People hate feeling guilt. Being told they don't have any responsability for what happened may be great for most, but...There are many kinds of people. Shalltear-chan has a great sense of responsability. Being told that it wasn't her fault...For a person like her, that would just being her misery. She's already trying to drown that misery in alcohol.]
Shalltear:Th...There was no need to mention the last part.
Ainz scratched his chin, taking the boy's words in. Kumagawa really had a great eye for people, be them human or not.
Ainz:Yes, I suppose I should habe thought of that more throughfully...I'll have to decide a suitable punishment.
Kumagawa:[About that, I have an idea.]
Cocytus returned to Nazarick, rewdy to face his failure. However, he wasn't ready for what he saw there.
Cocytus:Um...I'm sorry, but...What is happening?
Kumagawa took a new seat, enjoying his popcorn. The concern of Cocytus stood from what that seat was, or rather who.
Shalltear stood on the floor on all four, Kumagawa using her like one would do a chair. The most disturbing fact was her hevy breathing, that clearly didn't stem from exhaustation.
Albedo:I thought a punishment would resolve Shalltear's situation, but...This looks more like a reward for her.
