The sun streamed through the large windows of the Windsor Manor drawing room, casting a warm glow over the opulent furnishings. Lord Henry Windsor, freshly dressed and ready to face the day, walked with a spring in his step. He was looking forward to his parliamentary duties and, more importantly, to his visit to the Sharma household later in the afternoon. His thoughts lingered on Kate Sharma, and a small smile played on his lips as he imagined their time together.
However, his cheerful mood was quickly dampened as he entered the drawing room and found Katherine, the Dowager Duchess of Windsor, pacing anxiously. She clutched a crumpled paper in her hands, her face pale and distressed. The tension in the room was palpable.
"Katherine, good morning," Henry greeted, his voice filled with concern. "What troubles you so?"
Katherine looked up, her eyes wide with worry. "Henry, have you seen it? Lady Whistledown's latest article?" She thrust the paper towards him, her hands trembling.
Henry took the paper, smoothing it out to read the scandalous headline. His eyes scanned the words, and his expression shifted from confusion to shock, then disappointment. "The ton is abuzz with the news of a scandalous kiss between the Dowager Duchess of Windsor and Viscount Anthony Bridgerton," he read aloud. He let out a sigh, lowering the paper. "This is most unexpected."
"I thought the ball was a success," Katherine said, her voice wavering. "But now, all anyone will talk about is that kiss. How could I have been so foolish?"
Henry moved to her side, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Katherine, you mustn't blame yourself. The ball was indeed a triumph. This... incident should not overshadow that."
"But it will," Katherine insisted, her eyes filling with tears. "Everyone will be whispering about it. What will they think of me? What will they think of us?"
Henry frowned, his expression softening as he considered her words. "Katherine, you are a widow, not a blushing debutante. The ton's scrutiny will be less severe for you than it would be for an unmarried lady. Nevertheless, it is a scandal, and we must handle it carefully."
Katherine nodded, wiping away a tear. "What should I do?"
"Lay low for a while," Henry advised. "Let the gossip die down. Avoid any unnecessary public appearances until this news passes. The ton has a short memory, and they will soon find another topic to chatter about."
Katherine took a deep breath, nodding again. "You are right, Henry. I must stay strong and composed. Thank you for your counsel."
Henry gave her a warm smile. "Always, Katherine. Now, I must attend to my duties in Parliament. Later, I shall visit the Sharmas. Try not to let this weigh too heavily on you."
Katherine managed a small smile in return. "Thank you, Henry. Your support means the world to me."
With a final reassuring pat on her shoulder, Henry left the drawing room, his thoughts now clouded by the unexpected turn of events. As he made his way to his carriage, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of irritation towards Anthony Bridgerton. Despite his personal feelings, he knew he had to focus on the tasks ahead.
——
Later that afternoon, Henry arrived at the Sharma household, his earlier worries momentarily pushed aside. He was greeted warmly by Lady Mary Sharma and her daughters, Kate and Edwina. The drawing room was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, and the atmosphere was one of pleasant anticipation."Lord Henry, it is a pleasure to see you," Lady Mary greeted, her smile gracious and welcoming. "We are honored by your visit."
"The pleasure is mine, Lady Mary," Henry replied with a polite bow. "I hope I find you all well?"
