I flopped down on the couch with a heavy sigh, feeling utterly deflated. Chase raised an eyebrow, silently inquiry sensing my distress.
"Nick couldn't make it. He's bailed on me" I revealed.
Chase's expression spoke volumes about his understanding of my devastation, though he refrained from commenting.
"What's his reason?" Chase inquired.
"Jim needed him to help out at his pub. They're short-staffed because one of his employee left without notice" I explain with clear frustration in my voice.
"Couldn't they hire a part-time worker? You two have been planning this for a while. I think he shouldn't have bailed on you, Pumpkin-Pie," Chase shared his thoughts.
"I don't know, Chase. And I don't want us to start another fight because of this" I replied.
"Sometimes, I don't recognize you anymore. The big-headed girl that I know way back home. You're too soft with him. Whenever he does something like this, you just let it slide." Chase remarked.
I remained silent, uncertain of how to defend myself against Chase's accurate observation.
Chase stopped scrolling through his phone and give his full attention to me.
"For a thousand time or maybe million, I don't think your relationship with him is healthy. He's toxic. As your best friend, I only want what's best for you." Chase said.
"Sure, there were time I saw how happy you were with him and how he could be sweet to you, but most of the time, I saw the red flags everywhere, Nat. He should prioritize you, and your relationship out of all. And obviously he know how this trip was meant to you. Especially considering it was his first time meeting with your parents. He shouldn't change the plan like nothing happened." He finished.
This wasn't the first time Chase had tried to talk some sense to me about Nick. But, like usual, I brushed it off.
"He promised he would make it up to me." I said, trying to reason with Chase.
Chase just shrugged.
After having lunch together, we returned to my apartment, for me to finish up packing. Meanwhile, Chase just lounged lazily on the couch, having already packed everything he needed for the trip back home. He planned to stay the night since we had an early morning flight the next day.
"Do you know the worst part about Nick bailing on me?" I asked.
"Whouaat?" Chase responded with his annoying slang.
"I don't have anyone to distract me from that woman. Oh god, just thinking about it, make me feel overwhelmed. Now I need to come up with something to make her disappear." I said nonchalantly.
"Do you mean sex, by the word 'distract' you?" Chase teased her.
"Shushh.."
"Why do you hate Miss Ortiz so much? I know you've shared with me, how your life changed since she became a part of your family. But, I haven't seen her do anything bad to you. I still don't understand why?" Chase asked, genuinely curious.
I glared at him and said "I just hate her. She taken everything from me - my parents, my joy. You will understand when she constantly interfering your life."
I added, "Thank goodness, you're coming with me. Even though you're the pain in the ass, at least you can keep me entertained, with your annoying jokes."
Chase roll his eyes in response.
"Just for the record, I fancy her. She's my muse. I love all of her work Natty. She's a genius, the fashion goddess"
"You better keep your amusing thoughts about her in your head before I throw you out of my apartment"
"And she's beautiful" Chase chimed in.
"You're gay, aren't you?"
"I can be straight just for her" Chase said knowingly, trying to rile me up.
******
"Are you done?" Chase asked when he noticed me absentmindedly scrolling on my phone. I had been waiting a text from Nick since this afternoon but still nothing.
I let out a heavy sigh and replied, "Yeah..."
"Let's just loosen up a little bit. Wanna have a few drinks, Pumpkin-Pie?" Chase suggested.
I thought it was a good idea. I really need to take my mind off Nick tonight.
"Sure, but let's make it more exciting. How about, Truth or dare?" I challenged him.
"Oh Natty, when I ever backed down from a challenge." Chase teased as he got up to get our drinks.
"Make it spicy, Natty. I can't wait for you to spill your dirty little secret." Chase said as he handed me a beer.
"Let me start" Chase volunteered.
"Did Nick eat you out this week?" He asked with his devilish smile.
I choked on my drink and started coughing hard. Chase just laughed at my reaction.
"Come on, bring it on Nat" Chase can't wait for my reply.
As Chase impatiently waits for my response, I take a sip of my beer before replying.
"He never went down on me," I say.
"But, I'm fine with it. Because that's not something that I enjoy in general. That's not my thing. It shows that we are the soulmate made from heaven."
"Interesting, never know that bout' you, but trust me, Pumpkin-pie, you don't know what you're losing out here" Chase smirked.
As the night goes on, both of us become a little bit tipsy.
"We should probably call it a night; we have an early flight tomorrow," I suggest.
Chase nods in agreement, but before I go to my room, I blurted out something I hadn't planned on sharing with anyone, even with Chase.
Maybe this is the beer do the talking.
"Nick drugged me..." I said.
Chase is muted. But I can see the seriousness in his eyes as he tries to process the new information I'm sharing with him.
"When?"
"How?" Chased asked quietly.
His fists clench, and I know I have no choice but to share the details of that night with him.
