(Night time) Syrena's POV

We have reached the pools and I can hear my past sisters screams. I wish I could cry and moan their passing. But I will not give Blackbeard what he wants. He wants me to cry and I refuse too. I pray that I will be able to escape them, if I could just get to the water. Maybe I can escape.

"Mermaids" Blackbeard says as the torch in his hand illuminates the remains of one of my past sisters. My legs are placed in the water. "Careful these pools run deep" he tells his crew. "If she escapes, all is lost" he states. I hiss as they hold me in place.

I made to look at my dead sisters bodies. "Look. Look! Staked out to die, to dry in the sun. Only half in the water. Not enough to live, but just enough to make the dying slow" Blackbeard tells me. "Think on it. Your people, murdered, harvested for their tears. Syrena, won't you cry?" he asks me.

"All die, even you. Soon, I hear" I hiss at him. He comes over to me and grabs me by my hair. I hiss in pain, but don't cry.

"Listen. Can you not hear your sisters scream? Do you not hear them?" he asks me. As I try to block out the screams. "We need but one tear" he tells me. I glare at him and he back hands me. "Vile creature" he sneers.

"Chop off her fingers one by one" one the crew suggests. As I the one who had helped me so much being held back. Two other members make their own suggestions and the man breaks free. He ran over to Blackbeard and the woman.

"Where's your voice in this?" he asks her. I am trying to remember what his name is. I know I have heard someone say it.

"Maybe she'll have a change of heart when the sun rises" the woman states. I hiss, no I won't.

"Oh, aye, she will burn, but I cannot wait for the sun. Perhaps we should build a fire" Blackbeard suggests.

"No" the kind man tells him.

"Do not contest me, cleric" Blackbeard sneers.

"You will not torture her!" he snaps.

"We need only one tear" the woman tells him.

"I will tear every scale from her body one by one if I see fit. If that displeases you, go pray" Blackbeard adds.

"I was wrong. Not every soul can be saved. Yours cannot" the man tells him.

"Behold, gentlemen, a man formerly of faith" Blackbeard says gesturing to him.

"That vile creature, as you call her, is worth a hundred of you" the man states.

"Oh, you care for her? You fancy her. And do not deny what is clear to my eyes" Blackbeard states. As I look at the man, he likes me? He is cute and has helped me a lot, he gives me hope. "Question is, does she fancy you?" he asks and looks at me. I tried to hide my emotions and fail. "By God, she does. We are in luck!" he declares.

The man is brought to his knees and a knife held to his throat. "Bring forth a tear or witness the death of this poor soul" Blackbeard tells me. No, I can't cry. I will not give him what he wants.

"Syrena, if you could manage a tear, I would be grateful" the man tells me. I don't cry and he if cut. He falls to the ground as I whine loudly, but don't cry.

"Aye, mermaids are tough. The lot of them. Tie her up like the others. And get rid of this" Blackbeard orders. The Phillip's body is taken away as I tied up.

(Mini time skip)

I don't know how long I have been tied up. I remembered the man's name though, it's Philip. I was drifting off to sleep when I felt someone messing with the rope keeping me trapped. I open my eyes and gasp, it's Philip. He's alive. "I'm sorry, Syrena" he tells me as he releases my hands.

Lowering me farther into the pool as I turn to face him. "Philip, you're alive" I say overjoyed. As I feel my eyes start to water with tears of joy.

"Yes" he says.

"You came for me. Why?" I ask him.

"You're different, are you not?" he asks me. I look at him confused. What's he mean by different? "Do you know not of kindness? Compassion?" he asks as I start to cry. A tear rolling down my cheek. Suddenly we are both grabbed and a glass vial is placed on my cheek catching my tear.

"Tears of sorrow, never. Mermaids be too tough for that. But tears of joy. They say these be the more potent anyway" Blackbeard states.

"Syrena, on my word, I had no part in this" Philip tells me I glare up at him. Not trusting him. "Let her go. You don't need her now" he tells Blackbeard.

"Let her go? No. Secure her bonds. We leave her with her own" Blackbeard orders. I am tied up again and left to die. I look up at the moon praying that someone would come to save me.

(Time skip to morning) Mary's POV

I finally reached the pools Jack told me about and grab my head in pain. As I hear screams all around me. They must be the screams of the mermaids who died here. I had been told we could hear our ancestors screams, but never thought it was true. I wipe the tears from my eyes and dive into the closest pool.

I start to swim looking for Syrena. I soon see her limp tail and swam over to her. I surface beside her and shake her gently. "Syrena" I say and no response. No, please don't let me be to late. Suddenly the priest appears and I hiss at him.

"You came for her" he says shocked and I snarl. As he kneels down beside us. "I only want to help" he states. I notice he is bleeding badly from his stomach. He touches Syrena's cheek and she does not wake. "Oh God, you will not take her. If you have taken her, you will give her back" he prays as he cuts her loose. I catch her, lowering her more into the water. "Give her back, please" he pleads.

"Please, come back Syrena" I plead. She wakes slowly. She then grabs my hand and dives under water. Having me follow her, away from the priest.
