Haldi hiccups

Hayat's Pov

Today has been so hectic, and I still can’t stop thinking about Rano. How does he know me? Okay, okay, never mind, Hayat. You don’t need to think about that now. Focus on how you’re going to talk to your parents about the scholarship and persuade them to let you go. Ugh, I’m so frustrated. But I think the real reason for my restlessness isn't just the scholarship—it's him, Mr. Murat Sarsilmaz, who isn't coming back to India. Now, I have no option but to go to Malaysia.

I’m not happy, and this restlessness started when Baba told me about his friend’s son’s proposal. I don’t want to get married to someone who isn't Murat. But I think I can meet Phupho at Suhail Bhai’s wedding ceremony. She must be coming. I'll ask Baba.

Soon, I started getting ready for the haldi ceremony.  The function was taking place in the garden, with separate areas for males and females. First, I went to Taya Abba's house, and as expected, everybody started drooling over me with Suhail Bhai. He even sent his proposal for me, knowing I'm married. I just rolled my eyes. There, all my cousins were sitting with dhol, and Reema was also present.

"Hayat, come and join us na," Reema said as she saw me, but I was in no mood to sit there and become an object for their drooling. I went to the kitchen to help Tayi Amma and Chachi. As I was at the entrance, I overheard their conversation.

Chachi was saying with disgust, "Bhabi, have you seen Hayat? What she is doing? She came in front of Wali to entangle him. She is so clever, she is using my innocent son. Now he wants me to make her my daughter-in-law."

Tayi Amma, nodding her head in approval, continued, "You are right, Shabana. She used to do this with Suhail also. He was fighting with me and his Abba that he would only marry Hayat."

This was enough for me. I couldn’t believe they thought of me this way. For them, I’m that type of girl? Now, I’m not going to help them at all. I marched outside, determined to show them who I really am.

I went to where all the cousins were sitting and asked Reema with exaggerated sweetness, "Reema, is Phupho not coming to attend the wedding?"

Reema replied, "Baba did invite her, but I think she will not come."

"Yeah, you are right, Reema. Tumse toh itna khaas rishta bhi nahi hai jitna humse, aur humse toh unka dusra rishta bhi hai," I said, glancing at Wali’s dumbfounded face before moving out of the house into the lawn where the function would take place.

People had started arriving. I was just walking and observing the environment where everybody was talking with each other when I became hell-shocked—not by seeing a boy, but by what he had in his hands. It was a bouquet of white roses, the same kind I had found in the kitchen. I hadn’t told anyone about that bouquet.

The boy handed me the bouquet and said, "Someone asked me to give you this," then ran away to play with his friends. I fixated on the flowers. There was a note. I opened it, and it was empty.

Someone is definitely pranking me. I don't know what pleasure people get from doing such things. This is getting too weird, and I’m determined to find out who’s behind it. But for now, I have a wedding to survive.

As I pondered over the mysterious bouquet, I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. I mean, seriously, who has the time to pull off such elaborate pranks? Maybe it's someone from the family trying to lighten my mood. Or maybe it's just life’s way of adding a little drama to my already chaotic day.

But deep down, a part of me was excited about the scholarship and the new adventures awaiting in Malaysia. I just needed to figure out how to convince my parents without them worrying too much.

The haldi ceremony was about to begin, and I joined the others in the garden, ready to put all these thoughts aside and enjoy the festivities. As the music played and laughter filled the air, I realized that no matter what happened, I had the strength and determination to face it all. And with that thought, I decided to embrace the moment and celebrate with my family and friends.
