Cliffs and Claiming

I've been to my fair share of summer camps in my lifetime, and never have I seen so many young kids so
Ready to go to war.

From what I've learned, this version of capture the flag is not very family friendly. Here, they use it as some kind of training exercise, and they take it really seriously.

Percy stood on a small mound in front of our team and attempted to get everyone's attention.

"Alright guys, I really think this time we can win. They may have Annabeth, BUT. You know what we have? Friendship! Determination! And clarisse! So let's go kick some butt!" I can barely hear Percy shout to the group over all the murmuring and the contant fiddling  of armour. All I could think about is how stupid i look in this helmet, and how dead I am once this thing starts.

Percy steps off the mound and a girl who I can only assume is clarisse takes his place, the crowd goes silent as she explains the plan.

I try my hardest to pay attention, but I can't seem to wrap my head around why this is more important than finding Josh.

Lost in my thoughts I don't notice Percy walk up behind me,
"Hey, follow me." He whispers. I jump and raise my sword to his chest. At the moment, I thought I was pretty badass so when he laughed in my face it kinda killed my ego. In hindsight, I would laugh too.

"Woah careful there, wouldn't wanna hurt anyone."
Percy pushed my sword aside with his palm. We got the attention of clarisse causing her to stare daggers into my soul. Percy ran off, and I decided to follow, not wanting to deal with her wrath.

"Where are we going?" I shout after him.
"We're getting in position"
I follow him through the forest, well, follow is a strong word, more like stumbled after him.

We get to a clearing lined with forest on one side and a cliff leading to the lake on the other.

"I'm technically the team captain so I can do whatever I want." He chuckles looking off the cliff. And when I say cliff I mean 20ft drop straight into the lake.

"How are we helping the team out here?"

"Oh this isn't about capture the flag, I just wanted to talk." Percy sat on the edge of the cliff with his legs dangling off. He tossed his sword aside and gestured for me to sit.

"I've been doing this for a long time now you know, I started when I was twelve. I've fought more monsters than I can count and it still doesn't feel normal."

I sit awkwardly beside him, I takeoff my helmet and place it in my lap silently, not knowing what to say. Why would he be telling this to me? What have I done to get his attention? My whole goal was to stay under the radar, and now the most popular guy at camp wants to have a chat. Great.

"I know you just got here but, we really need you on this quest. I wish I could tell you all the details, and one day soon I can. I want you to know that you'll be safe with us." He turned to look at me, i didn't expect the look on his face to be so, sympathetic. If that makes sense.

"Why would you need me of all people? I didn't even know him that long, I don't know how to sword fight-"

"Your dreams." Percy interrupts "turns out what you've been dreaming has had some truth to it."

That was the last thing I wanted to hear.

"And truthfully, I know there's more you're not telling me." I stand up in response.

"Why should I trust you? Why should I trust anything that any of you are saying? The last time I trusted someone they almost killed me with a scorpion! How do I know you're not any better! I don't even know why I'm here. I know both my parents and they are not gods okay! I just want to go back to my-" my voice cut out as I choked back a tear.
"Look. I appreciate you looking out for me but all I want to do is survive. I've got no one to go back to in New York and I'm just trying to make the most of this. As much as I want to see Josh come back safely, I am not the person for this job. You-"

"Alannah." Percy Interjects.

"I am not done-" he stands up looking about a foot above my head in shock. This throws me off guard, I stop and look above me.

A glowing teal coloured trident floating above my head.
I have no idea what this means but according to the look on Percy's face it can't be good.
