My eyes widen from the nap as I feel a large sudden wave of cursed energy. I quickly blink the sleep out of my eyes and snap my head towards the door to the living room. There, I see Gojo leaning against the doorframe, watching us with his arms folded. The room is dim, except for the flickering light from the TV playing some new movie in the background. His silhouette is stark against the soft glow, his expression unreadable. The contrast of his presence against the peaceful scene is jarring, and the weight of his cursed energy fills the room, making the air feel thick and heavy. For a moment, neither of us moves, the silence between us loaded with unspoken words and the gravity of the day's events.
He then suddenly quietly chuckles, "Hehe, looks like you settled in just fine," as he looks at Megumi and Tsumiki asleep on me.
I can't help but playfully roll my eyes. "What can I say?" I tell him. "How was your mission? You've been gone for some time."
Gojo groans, "Stupid higher-ups kept stacking more missions as I finished them. It was fine for the most part, but insanely boring and warm out there."
I start to feel bad for Gojo; the poor guy doesn't get any rest. "You tired or hungry?" I ask, genuine concern in my voice.
He steps further into the room, the tension in the air shifting as his cursed energy subsides. "A bit of both, actually," he admits, running a hand through his hair. "But seeing this...," he gestures to the kids and me, "it's nice. Thanks for taking care of them."
I smile softly, adjusting Tsumiki who had snuggled closer in her sleep. "They're good kids. Just needed a home-cooked meal and some company."
Gojo nods, a rare moment of sincerity crossing his features. "I owe you one. Seriously."
"Well," I say, trying to lighten the mood, "I did have to deal with a mouldy peach and an empty fridge. You really need to get your act together, Gojo."
He laughs, a genuine sound that fills the room. "Noted. Maybe I'll hire you as my personal chef and babysitter."
I chuckle. "You couldn't afford me."
He smirks, his eyes twinkling even in the dim light. "We'll see about that."
I look down at the sleeping kids, feeling a warmth in my chest that I haven't felt in a long time. "Gojo...," I start, my voice softer now, "they're lucky to have you. Even if you are a bit of a mess."
He smiles, a real one this time, and sits down on the floor beside the couch. "Thanks, Y/N. That means a lot."
The room falls into a comfortable silence, the only sound the gentle breathing of Tsumiki and Megumi. For a moment, everything feels right in the world, despite the chaos outside.
I carefully move the children's heads off of me, gently shifting Tsumiki's weight and making sure Megumi's position doesn't disturb his sleep. Gojo moves closer, his steps almost silent, and picks them both up with a surprising gentleness, cradling them as if they were the most precious things in the world. I follow him as he carries them to their bedroom, a soft glow from the hallway light casting a serene ambiance in the room.
Gojo lays Tsumiki down first, her small body curling up instinctively under the blanket. He then places Megumi beside her, tucking them both in with practiced ease. I watch from the door, feeling a sense of peace settle over me. Gojo's movements are careful and deliberate, his usual carefree demeanour replaced with a tenderness that surprises me.
He whispers quiet goodnights to both of them, his voice barely audible but filled with affection. As he leans in to check on Megumi, a quiet voice grumbles, "Goodnight...idiot."
