Chapter 7

Saturday, October 29, the day of the college party! I'm terrified. I'm shaking in my boots, my timbers are shivering. Ally keeps insisting it's going to be amazing, but I don't believe her. At least Alex seems nice enough, I'm not completely dreading being in his company for the night.

The last few sessions I've had with Mr. Grumpy have been frustrating. Well, not more so than usual, at least. He's just impatient with me and my lack of focus. I can't help it, it's like I have an innate drive to ignore all of my schoolwork. But at least I don't have to worry about that on the weekend!

Ally came over early in the afternoon to help me get ready. My costume is a cute white toga with a gold leaf belt, and a matching gold lead circlet. My shoes are reminiscent of ballet slippers, light and form fitting, with gold ribbons that tie all the way up my legs. I put on a few gold bracelets and call it good. I look less like a Greek goddess and more like a Greek princess or something, but the point gets across I think.

Ally's costume is just a tight black dress with a fake tail and a cat ear headband. She also drew on whiskers and a nose with eyeliner, and gave herself red lips and a black smoky eye look. She looks cute, but just as basic as I imagined. Greyson said he and "the boys" are all going as various classic monsters, so ghosts, vampires, werewolves, etc.

It's only about 6 pm so me and Ally decide to head out and get some dinner before the party. It starts at 8, and is about 25 minutes away, so we still have a lot of time. We go to IHOP, one of my favorite comfort food places. We sit down and both order chocolate chip pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon.

"So, how are things going with Grey?" I ask in between bites.

"Uh... great! I really think he's close to asking me out soon! Maybe tonight?" She smiles as she eats her pancakes, a dreamy look in her eyes.

"That's great!" I exclaim. "I can see you like him a lot." She smiles at me and responds.

"Yeah, I do... I hope you forgive me for my previous behavior? It wasn't very ladylike of me..."

"Of course, I forgive you. Love makes people crazy, after all." We both giggle, and sit for a bit longer and gossip about various people at school.

"By the way," Ally says after a while, "how are things going with Mr. Steele?"

I nearly choke on my eggs before replying. "Um, good? I think. He's helping, you know. We're uh... we're figuring things out! My learning style is something we're still hammering out."

"I meant, does he hate you still? Haha." Ally laughs a bit and takes a sip of soda, waiting for my answer.

"Uhhhhhh... Yeah, I think he does. He says he doesn't dislike me... but he acts like he does. And, you know, actions speak louder than words."

"Yeah, that makes sense. I see him frown at you all the time. And the fact that you're the only one in our class who has to turn in notes for a grade? It's bullshit!" Ally angrily eats the rest of her food, then asks if she could eat mine. I nod, too anxious for the party to really eat.

People stare at us the whole time we eat, probably on account of our costumes, and the fact that we're maybe a bit too old for costumes. But neither of us care, we're having a good time, and that's all that matters!

Once she's finished, we head out. We're still a bit early, so we drive around for a bit before it's time. We took Ally's car, since she's the one who knows where we're going. After about 20 minutes of aimless driving, we head over to the party. It's about 8:15 when we arrive, we're just about on time. People are arriving in droves, pouring through the front door, and out the back door into the backyard, where there seems to be a temporary bar set up.
