The Nekoma volleyball club just finished their training for the day. Most of the members have left or are leaving, while Kenma was next to Rin on the bleachers— Kuroo was still talking to the coach and they were waiting for him to finish. The three often walked home together, and the captain promised that he would buy the two ice cream after training. It wasn't often that Kenma talked a lot, and if he did, it was about volleyball or a game that he was playing. He rarely talked about his feelings, but for some reason, he talked that day.
"Aren't you two going to do something about it?" Kenma asked Rin, looking at her from the corner of his eyes.
"About what? I don't know what you're talking about," she answered, looking straight at him. Kenma simply sighed and shrugged, and then gestured to Kuroo who was now laughing with Coach Nekomata.
"It's obvious that he likes you, I don't know if you haven't noticed it," he started, surprising Rin who blinked rapidly. She was taken aback. She knew that Kenma was observant, but she did not know whether to believe what Kenma was saying. "It's pretty obvious to everyone but you."
"I don't think so. I mean, I do know you are observant but—"
"He does. It's frustrating watching you two." He stated, sighing and then leaning back on his seat. "Embarrassingly so."
"But he asks me for advice." Rin replied, raising a brow, but feeling nervous still. What if Kenma was right? She didn't know if she could accept that. She didn't know if she could.
"Hence the embarrassing part. Kuroo's a nice guy, but I understand if you don't like him that way. You're close friends, after all," Kenma replied, his cat-like eyes now fixated on Kuroo who was walking closer to them.
Rin felt all the cells in her body feel nervous— she wasn't sure how to feel about what Kenma said. He sounded so serious, and she knew that Kenma wasn't the type to joke around about such things. She'd be lying if she said that there were no signs that Kuroo liked her, but she tried to act like a fool and ignore them. After all, he had been asking her for advice these days and it looked like he had been talking to Alisa too.
What she didn't know was how Kuroo only talked to Alisa to get advice about what he could do about his crush on her.
Kuroo was only a few meters away when Rin managed to choke out a reply to Kenma.
"It's not like I don't like him, it's just that I don't know and understand much about love."
When Kuroo reached the two, he raised his brows and folded his arms across his chest as if questioning what the two had been talking about. With that same look, he looked back and forth between Kenma and Rin.
"What are you two talking about?" Kuroo asked, and both Kenma and Rin simply stood up from their seats and ignored his question.
"Let's hurry. I want to finish this one game that I've been playing this week," Kenma replied, "I'm telling Shoyo about it."
With a chuckle, Kuroo let the two walk ahead of him. It was getting a bit dark, but they were used to the scenery. It was a pretty splash of oranges and blues, bleeding into a nice violet.
Once they were out of the gym and near the school gates, Kuroo walked beside Rin who was watching the skies with a spaced out look on her face. He smiled and then tapped her shoulder, earning the girl's attention.
"Remember when I said I'm getting us ice cream?" Kuroo asked, a grin plastered across his lips. Rin nodded, a gentle smile painting her lips in return.
"How can I forget? Kenma and I want vanilla," Rin answered, chuckling as she skipped and walked next to Kenma who was busy playing on his device.
He nodded and watched two of his friends converse about the game on Kenma's switch.
If there was one thing he'd miss after high school, it would be these after school moments he had with Kenma and Rin. The last two years of his high school were spent like this, slow dusk with echoes of Rin's chuckles and Kenma's occasional yelps when the girl would play with him. He'd miss the smile on Rin's face when he'd buy ice cream for the three of them, and the I know what you're thinking looks that he receives from Kenma.
He didn't want it to end.
Just the thought of losing it when they become busy after high school, he simply could not imagine it. He could not think of a life without Kenma and Rin. How could he?
"Tetsu," her voice snapped her out of his trance, making him realize that they were already in a store and the two have chosen the ice cream they wanted. "Is something the matter?"
"Sorry. I was spacing out. Just get me the chocolate one," he said, fishing out his wallet and paying for their ice cream.
"Thanks!"
Kenma eyed Kuroo, aware that he had been in a daze. Lately, Kuroo had been thinking about the future and Kenma was well aware of it. He was opposed to how Kuroo doesn't want to confess. He was very sure that the taller male had a 90% chance with Rin, who was only around him, Kuroo, Yaku, Kai, and the rest of the volleyball club. And even within that group, she only really talks a lot with the third years and Kenma.
It was clear that Rin was fond of Kuroo as well. But to what extent?
Once out of the store, the three of them proceeded to walk side by side, staring at the path ahead of them while eating their treats.
"I'm going to miss these slow after school moments we have," Rin cracked the silence. Both guys looked at her, as if not expecting her to be the one saying that.
"Me, too." Kuroo replied, sighing after.
"I can't imagine training without Kuroo. And Rin's piercing gaze." Kenma added, making the two older teens flip their head towards him.
"That's actually sweet of you," Kuroo cooed, laughing and then playfully nudging Kenma's shoulder.
"Stop." Kenma said, furrowing his brows and glaring up at Kuroo. "I hope Rin gets a boyfriend so she will stare at him alone and won't stare at us so intently while training, it makes me nervous sometimes."
"Hey!" Rin protested, the one nudging Kenma this time. He had a small smirk on his lips, looking down. He knew he did something when Kuroo went quiet for a bit. "Don't say that."
"Do you know something I don't? Does Rin have someone she likes right now?" Kuroo suddenly asked, looking seriously between Kenma and Rin.
"I don't know. Rin, do you?" Kenma diverted the question to the long haired girl.
"I don't know? Let's talk about something else! I swear to God, Kenma!"
Kenma's chuckle and Rin's protests echoed, and Kuroo's thoughts were plagued with what ifs.
If Rin had someone she liked, he could only think about two possible people who the female could take interest in. Yaku or Kai. They were both very caring and reliable, and Kuroo knew that if Rin were to like someone, it would be someone like those two.
"Is it Yaku or Kai?" Kuroo questioned, but he was met with silence from the two. Kenma sighed heavily, shaking his head and then planting his attention on his ice cream instead. Rin simply shrugged it off and never answered.
"You're smart but sometimes you're such a fool," Kenma whispered, thinking no one heard him.
Kuroo did. And he thought about it whole night.
What did Kenma mean? After they all separated ways later that evening, Kuroo was left spacing out once more.
What could his best friend mean by those words? Kenma was not one to leave meaningless statements, and he wanted to know what he meant.
Did he have a chance? Or did that mean that he was just not smart enough not to know whether Rin liked Yaku or Kai?
The events of the following day confused him even more.
