Everyone could tell that something was new about Kuroo and Rin. Their smiles were more relaxed and their eyes had a glimmer in them more than usual. Anyone could tell that the two of them seemed happier than they were, but could not exactly tell why or how it happened.
Of course, some had a clue about what might have happened, but they were also well aware that Kuroo was one who promised to himself that he could not ever confess to Rin in fear of ruining a perfectly functional friendship.
Yet some promises are bound to be broken, and such has happened to Kuroo's.
The volleyball club just finished their training and were filing out of the gymnasium. All too tired, they weren't really conscious enough to immediately notice what was new, until Kuroo and Rin walked past them. Their captain had an arm around Rin's shoulder, and Kenma was lagging behind them as if that much was a natural occurrence.
It would have been counted as normal if Kuroo wasn't sticking to the girl much closer than usual.
"Hey, what's happening here?" Yaku called out, about to tease Kuroo who was walking ahead of them. "Did he have the guts already?"
"Oh, please. I'm not too sure—" Kai was about to reply, but he was cut off when he realized that Rin's hand was intertwined with Kuroo's, the one which he had placed on her shoulder. "Or he did."
It was only the third years and Kenma left as the others were too tired to listen in. They have left and went on their way home, while the five left were staring at each other blankly.
Was this the same Kuroo Tetsuro that they knew? Of course, they never doubted his interpersonal communication skills, but he always shied away when it came to confessing his one sided love to Rin. Or, what they thought was one sided.
"What's the matter?" Rin asked, furrowing her brows as she pulled her hand away from Kuroo's, much to his disappointment. Kenma could only shake his head and sigh.
"Isn't this a huge thing, Kuroo finally managed to confess to you after liking you for years? How are you so normal about it?" Yaku asked, and the four third years laughed.
"I mean, we've known each other for a couple of years already so I don't think such an event is worth the fuss," Rin explained, "And Kuroo told me that you guys were betting on it, too. How shameless, Yaku." She joked, and they chuckled.
"If you knew how much of a loser he was-"
"Okay, that's enough from you," Kuroo cut Yaku off, and they continued on to their journey back home.
The ride home was neither too long nor too quick, but they were definitely exhausted. Nekoma's volleyball team was working hard in order to qualify for nationals and possibly win the tournament, so it was natural for them to push themselves hard.
Kenma, who was usually playing on his gaming device, was napping as he sat down on the train. Kuroo, on the other hand, was just whispering to Rin.
"Are you comfortable?" He asked, his brows furrowed since the train was starting to get packed. "You can lean on me if you're sleepy. I'll wake you and Kenma up if we're near our stop."
"It's okay, I can stay up, Tetsu," she replied, smiling softly at him. "You can rest on my shoulder if you're tired. I think you need it more than I do."
"Thanks," he said, leaning his head on her shoulder. See, Kuroo Tetsuro was a tall person and Rin wasn't exactly the tallest. Instead of leaning on her shoulder, Kuroo settled with leaning on her head to which Rin found amusing. "You're small."
"You don't have to remind me that, tall person," she whispered, "Just rest up. I'll wake you later."
And so Kuroo fell asleep within seconds, comfortable enough to do so. Or just simply too tired. Either way, Rin smiled softly at the thought of Kuroo resting against her. Such a reliable and responsible captain he is. She had always been proud of who he was and what he became, and she felt like she didn't tell him that enough.
It took a few more minutes for them to arrive at their stop and for her to wake up her two friends— as sleepy as they were, they dragged their bodies around so that they could at least walk back home to continue their well deserved rest.
The three of them were silent, but the atmosphere wasn't really awkward. On the contrary, the silence itself was comforting and Rin thought that she would end up missing her journeys home with Kuroo and Kenma after graduating.
"You're spacing out," Kuroo pointed out, and she flinched before looking at her two friends. "Penny for your thoughts?"
"I was just thinking about how I'll miss going home with the two of you after we graduate. Kenma will be going the same path and we'll be having separate ways. I was thinking how big of a difference it would be in our daily lives." She replied, and Kenma's eyes lingered on her before speaking.
"We can keep in touch through messaging and social media if that's what you're worried about. We won't forget you, you're our precious friend. And Kuroo's, well, special someone," Kenma stated, and his words made Rin's eyes teary. Kenma wasn't one to speak a lot, but he always made sense whenever he did.
"Promise?" She asked, and the two nodded.
"Of course. We promise," Kuroo was the one to reply this time. "And I'll visit your campus if we end up not studying in the same university. I can do that. I'll go wherever you are."
"Have that talk when I'm not around," Kenma jested, "God, he's so lovesick he's willing to travel for you."
"What's wrong with that?" Kuroo asked, raising a brow as he folded his arms across his chest and huffed. Rin chuckled, shaking her head as Kenma brushed Kuroo off.
"Nothing," Kenma shrugged, sighing after. "I'll get going first."
They didn't realize that they were already in front of Kenma's home so when the second year declared he'd be going in, Kuroo and Rin nodded. Kenma opened the gate, and after the sound of the front door echoed, the two were left to themselves.
"I should walk you home," Kuroo said, smiling at her.
"Do you wanna stay for dinner?" Asked Rin, giving back a smile to him.
"I mean, I could. If you're gonna miss me, just say it," he joked, earning him a chuckle and a playful slap on his arm.
"I bet you're the one who's going to miss me, not the other way round," said Rin, an eyebrow raising as she started walking towards her home.
Kuroo followed behind her, letting out a chuckle before catching up with her and holding her hand in his.
"You might be right about that."
