So... that quirk ended up killing me.
I was resuscitated like... I don't know.. 8 times? I was only semi-aware of my surroundings, mostly getting small bits of conversation.
Turns out, if I hadn't had run for the child's and my lives, I would've been fine! The quirk would've gone away in 30 minutes, and it wouldn't have done anything. However because I chose to be a hero, and in the process sped my heartbeat up, the quirk ended up making it stop. The pain was just a warning to keep me from doing what I did, and I ignored it. So now, I'm dead. I'm pretty sure the doctors have given up on bringing me back, even though Nedzu, who showed up after the 3rd attempt at resuscitation, insisted that they kept trying.
With each attempt I try to force my heart to keep beating. I didn't want to die after all, but to convince them I could be saved I needed to show I was aware.
Tenth attempt.
I tried to open my eyes the moment I felt my heartbeat restart momentarily. They don't. My heart stops.
The doctors insist I'm dead, but Nedzu insists I can be saved. Animals are often more sensitive to certain stimuli than humans are, so he probably knows I am aware.
Twelfth attempt.
I try my fingers instead. I feel them trying to move, which is more progress than with my eyes.
Fifteenth attempt.
My finger twitches. I know Nedzu sees it because he more urgently insists to try again. The doctors try to convince him it's too late for me, but he doesn't yield. He instead threatens their livelihoods with blackmail. That quiets the doctors, and they continue.
Seventeenth attempt.
Finally my finger moves in a noticeable way. The doctors can't believe it, and I can tell Nedzu is smiling as they become more urgent with the attempts.
Someone comes in, just as my heart stops for the 21st time.
They lay their hands on my chest, and I can feel their quirk reaching into my chest and grabbing my heart. They start manually pumping it, and I am finally able to open my eyes.
"I've been alive this whole time lol." I managed to say, before closing my eyes again. It was so difficult trying to keep them open, and speaking drained my already limited strength.
I just wanted to let them know that they almost gave up on someone who was still alive. The kid's quirk had only stopped my heart, not killed me like previously thought. With how long it felt for them to realize I was alive I can assume that I wouldn't have actually died even with my heart not beating. I would've been too weak to move, but still alive and somewhat aware. Almost like being in a limbo between life and death.
I heard them preparing for some kind of surgery that would put something by my heart to keep it moving. I hoped that whatever it was, it would still allow me to exercise without killing me.
I was given a ton of painkillers in preparation, and let myself fall asleep so I didn't have to be aware of them cutting into me.
......
When I woke up again, I found myself in the same hospital room I had been in when I first came here.
The beeping of the monitor beside me told me I was still alive, and the surgery had been successful.
I raised my hand to look at the IV stuck in my arm, which let others around me know I was awake. I was, but I was dazed from the pain killers. So I said some pretty random things while they made sure things were working correctly.
