Featherstone Motors' main office building was a modern, glass building in the heart of Aberdeen's centre — it was an obviously expensive location, with cars parked outside for sale.
Jake hadn't ever been inside this particular branch, but had often waited in his father's car outside — it was just as weirdly intimidating as he remembered.
He stood by the door, looking up at the building pensively as he felt Raleigh come up behind him, asking, "Want me to go in with you?"
"I'll be fine." Jake shook his head, "You should head to McDonalds with the others, you don't need to wait for me."
Raleigh gave a small smile, stepping into his space, "What if I want to wait?"
His gaze melted Jake, making his insides feel all gooey and distractingly nervous and he couldn't help the small laugh that caught in his throat.
"You're sweet." Jake's eyes scoped the map of his face affectionately, "I won't be long, okay?"
Raleigh nodded, lightly clapping his shoulder, "See you soon."
Jake squeezed the hand that was on his shoulder, repressing his shiver at the skin on skin contact, then headed inside, strolling over to the less-than-enthusiastic receptionist, who barely graced him with a glance as he approached.
"Can I help you?" the blonde asked, her hair pulled back in a bun so tight that seemed to pull back her face.
Jake awkwardly shuffled, "I'm here to see my father, Lucius Featherstone?"
"Your fa—" the woman looked up properly and she stiffened, "You must be Jake. I'm sorry, but your father is busy."
Jake cocked an eyebrow, "Busy? With wha—"
He broke off when, as if on cue, he saw his father descending the stairs and coming through the double doors, though the sight of a woman hanging on his arm, laughing as he whispered to her, made his heart sink a little.
She was a shapely, voluptuous woman with red hair and green eyes, clad in a pantsuit with the first button ever so slightly undone.
It was a familiar sight, his father with a woman on his arm and Jake felt the familiar anger rising in his gut, though kept it quelled as his dad locked eyes with him, his smile instantly fading.
"Jake." Confusion filled the man's tone as he approached, "Aren't you supposed to be in school?"
Jake grit his teeth a little, replying, "It's a Saturday, dad. I couldn't get through on the phone yesterday so I thought I'd visit."
"Well, I'm afraid I'm a little busy, old boy." his father was using his professional tone, and Jake hated it, "Did you come all this way for just that or—"
Jake shook his head, "I'm with a few friends, we're having a day out." he unconsciously eyed the woman next to him, something that his father picked up on.
"This is Faye, she's my sec—"
Jake cut him off, "Your secretary, right?"
"Yes." Lucius noted the expression on his son's face, "Look, it's not like that. Now, what do you need, money?"
Jake was taken aback by the question, "What— No, I just wanted to tell you how my week's been. Not everything is to do with money."
"I know that!" His father defended, reaching out to touch his shoulder, which he shrugged off, "Look, I'm sorry. It's just not a good time today. Perhaps if you phone ahead next time."
I already tried that, Jake wanted to snark.
His father looked to the door, where he saw Raleigh waiting outside, "That one of your friends?"
