N strolled through the quiet streets, the winter air crisp against his visor. Today was a special day-it was time to pick up Beau from the new kindergarten. Recently, due to the 'domestication' of the disassembly drones, the colony had been branching out and reclaiming the ruined city. The thought filled N's circuits with excitement as he imagined the joy on Beau's face when he saw him.
Arriving at the kindergarten, N entered the building with a sense of anticipation. The cheerful sounds of children playing filled the air, and N couldn't help but smile. He approached the reception desk, where a stern-looking bot greeted him.
"Hello there," N said cheerfully. "I'm here to pick up Beau."
The reception bot eyed him warily, her optics narrowing. "And you are...?"
"I'm N Elliot-Doorman, Beau Doorman's dad," he replied, offering a friendly wave.
The reception bot's expression hardened. "Ah, yes. The disassembly drone."
N blinked, taken aback by her hostility. "Um, yes, that's me. Is everything alright?"
The reception bot crossed her arms, her tone icy. "We've had some concerns about having a disassembly drone around the children. Some of the parents are worried about safety."
N's circuits buzzed with confusion. He had never encountered such animosity before from a member of school faculty. "I assure you, I mean no harm. I'm just here to pick up my son."
The reception bot remained unmoved. "Nevertheless, we'll be keeping an optic on you. We can't have any incidents."
N nodded, trying to remain calm despite the tension in the air. "Of course, I understand. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'd like to see my son."
With a curt nod, the reception bot directed N to Beau's classroom. As he walked through the corridors, N couldn't shake the feeling of being unwelcome. It was a strange sensation, one he wasn't accustomed to.
Entering Beau's classroom, N's optics lit up at the sight of his son. Beau was chatting animatedly with his classmates, his faceplate lighting up with excitement. N approached him with a warm smile.
"Hey, Beau! Ready to go home?" he asked.
Beau's face lit up even brighter at the sight of his dad. "Dad!" he exclaimed, rushing over to hug him.
N scooped him up in his arms, his core swelling with love. "How was your day, buddy?"
Beau chattered excitedly about his day, showing N the drawings he had made and the friends he had made. N listened with rapt attention, his focus solely on his son. He was oblivious to the stares and whispers of the other parents, their apprehension palpable.
As they left the kindergarten, N couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He couldn't understand why anyone would still see him as a threat, especially when all he wanted was to be a good dad to Beau. Besides, it's been quite a few years since he killed an innocent worker drone.
"Hey, Dad?" Beau said, breaking N out of his thoughts.
"Yes, Beau?" N replied, looking down at his son.
"Are those parents mad at you?" Beau asked, his optics filled with confusion.
N sighed, unsure of how to explain the situation to his young son. "Some people don't understand us, Beau. But that's okay. As long as we know we're doing the right thing, that's all that matters."
Beau nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I still think you're the best dad ever, Dad."
N's heart swelled with pride. "And you're the best son ever, Beau."
