Aubrey Hall was up and full of people by 8am on Christmas eve. Thank God she had reframed from drinking last night. There were trucks upon trucks in the driveway decorating Aubrey Hall within an inch of its life. It was safe to say the Bridgerton's held the title for the UK's Christmas Eve party of the year. The Kardashian clan had nothing on Violet Bridgerton. Penelope asked if there was anything she could help with, but Daphne told her that it was best to stay clear. When Violet Bridgerton was on a mission, she was formidable. Plus, Daphne had organised a full spa day for the girls as the boys went 'golfing'.
Surprise.
Penelope grabbed her bag for the day but as she reached her door, her phone buzzed.
Gen Delacroix: File Sent (download here)
Penelope was confused but downloaded the file, and as she opened it......She immediately froze on the spot.
Penelope: Are these real?
Gen Delacroix: Yes. We have an investigation going on. It doesn't seem serious right now, but we need to keep our wits about us.
Penelope: I didn't think the book would generate such hate. The first two didn't receive any backlash like this.
Gen Delacroix: It's just some silly people trying to apply pressure to remove it from the shelves. Death threats are serious, but I will do everything to keep you protected.
Penelope: Thank you.
Gen Delcroix: I will keep you update with everything. Try not let this ruin your Christmas.
Penelope: Thanks Gen, I don't know what I'd do with you.
Gen Delacroix: I know.
Gen Delacroix: Have fun.
Penelope knew the latest instalment of the book had annoyed some people. But she didn't realise she caused that much upset for someone to physically threaten her life. There were some sick people in the world.
'You will be found and slaughtered Lady Whistledown.'
'We will make your life a living hell.'
'We'll fucking kill you bitch.'
'Sleep with one eye open, we will find you eventually.'
She knew Gen had to send her them to keep her aware of what was going on, as no doubt she would have found out eventually on social media, and that would have been ten times worse. But here Penelope was shaking against her door in fear. What if someone did find her? What if they could harm her? Penelope felt safe in Aubrey Hall, but she knew once she got back to the city, all bets were off. She had to figure out how to navigate this, and fast. Penelope ran to the bathroom with the bile rising in her throat, and she instantly threw up.
More than a few times.
It had to be the nerves.
She lifted herself from the toilet and stared at her face in the mirror. She knew she couldn't burden this to anyone else, no, she'd have to handle it alone. So she cleaned her teeth, threw cold water on her face, and quickly grabbed her bag again for the day.
