Icarus

In bitter hindsight, I'd already known
This liaison would leave me drowned;
A beacon that guides to love, laughter, lies,
Straining against the deep end.

And I was so close! But alas,
The solder of our love being just melted away,
Which was bound to happen
In the speed of our passion.

You gave me new hope of life;
A shining star that I'd presumed was in reach
And for a while I did enter perihelion
Only for heightened wing to fall.

My hand outstretch'd; my mouth left hanging
But words had decided to fail me -
And I plummeted, the smoke of love
Burned, so I closed my eyes.

And I'd realised how blind Cupid could foretell
When shooting his poison arrow to my guarded heart
A love that was never meant to be;
Destroyed by its own clutches.

Time was merciful; slow'd on impact
For you or I, what did it matter?
I chanced to see your face, before I turned to blue.
And I fell into a state of deep pareidolia
Knowing that at least I had
experienced like no other,
basked in your
sunlight.
