The Wedding Day
Akira arrived at Vasco's home, a beautiful yet imposing mansion where their wedding would take place. She wore a white saree that draped elegantly over her frame, with a matching sleeveless blouse that allowed her to stay cool while highlighting her toned arms. The saree featured exquisite embroidery that represented the rich heritage of Gujarat, blending with her Zoroastrian customs.
The fabric was light and airy, allowing her to move comfortably while maintaining an aura of traditional elegance.Akira's head was covered, a nod to both her Zoroastrian and Gujarati heritage. The intimate ceremony included only immediate family and a few close friends. Akira's close friend Mansi stood by her, looking slightly awkward due to her past relationship with Jeh, Akira's brother—a fact that everyone was aware of, though it remained unspoken.
Waiting for Vasco Akira sat alone on the stage, feeling a mix of nervousness and anticipation. Everyone's eyes were on her, making her feel a bit uneasy. She wasn't typically shy, but sitting there without Vasco felt isolating. Finally, Vasco appeared, wearing a crisp white suit that highlighted his broad chest and towering height. Akira felt a sense of relief knowing she could wear heels without towering over him. Before Vasco could join her on stage, Akira's mother stepped forward to perform the Achumichu ceremony.
She held a tray containing a raw egg, supari, rice, coconut, dates, and water. Circling these items, except the water, seven times around Vasco's head, she then threw them on the floor. The water was thrown to either side, symbolizing purification and protection. The CeremonyVasco's eyes were intense, never flickering, as he watched the ceremony.
Akira felt a slight unease, despite knowing Vasco. His presence was formidable, and his expression remained unreadable. During the rituals, Akira's mother was the most animated, chattering happily and performing each custom with enthusiasm. Her father, meanwhile, couldn't stop boasting about Akira, praising her as the best match Vasco could have found. Sometimes Akira wondered if her father saw all his children as products of his making, with her being the finest.
Vasco's father, Mr. Meherjirana, was present, engaged in conversations with Akira's father and other business associates, likely discussing the strategic benefits of the marriage. Akira noticed three boys nearby—Vasco's half-brothers from his father's second marriage. The youngest looked around 12, the middle one 14, and the oldest about 16.
They were the most vulnerable members of the family, given their father's and Vasco's intimidating presence.A Small Gesture Akira's youngest half-brother, Jamy (short for Jamshed), approached her and presented her with a lily.
He was a sweet, kind-hearted child, always trying to bring a bit of lightness to heavy situations.
He was followed by his mother, Rachna, with whom Akira shared a complicated history. Despite everything, Akira remained cordial.
She knew blaming Rachna wouldn't change the past or heal any wounds."Congratulations, Akira," Rachna said warmly."Thank you, Rachna," Akira replied with genuine gratitude. "I'm glad you and Jamy could be here.
Vasco, meanwhile, stood by with no visible expression, clearly annoyed by the wedding's hustle and bustle. Akira couldn't help but feel uncertain about their future. She knew this marriage was more than just a union of two individuals—it was a strategic alliance meant to strengthen their families' empires.
But how they would navigate this new chapter together remained an open question. As the ceremony progressed, Akira's mind wandered to the challenges ahead. She knew she had the strength and determination to face whatever came her way, but she couldn't predict how Vasco would fit into her life. Would they find a way to work together as partners, or would they struggle under the weight of their families' expectations?
The rituals concluded, and as Akira and Vasco exchanged vows, she took a deep breath.
This was the beginning of a new journey, and she was ready to face it head-on, with all its uncertainties and possibilities.
