Nick’s room and asked if he was my baby. And he had this weird monotone voice, it was unreal.” I explain. “Well what on earth was he doing in your house?” She asks me. “He said his mom was at work or something and after a while I felt uncomfortable so I asked him if he wanted me to take him home. He said sure so I drove down the road with him and Nick in the car and it was at least a mile from my house to his. But the thing is, his house was an old two story shack, but it was never there before! It wasn’t there when I was driving down here to move in!” I say in frustration and worry and confusion. “Well that’s odd,” mom says. “I suggest you stay away from that boy and his mother. Probably not the kind of people you’d be asking for sugar.” She adds. “That’s what I planned on doing ma, but what if the kid shows up at my house again?” I ask leaning back in the chair. “Just take him home again. You have no business with those people and nor they with you!” My mother exclaims to me. I sigh, “Alright mom, thanks. I have to go.” “Alright dear you take care now,” she replies sweetly. “Love you mom,” “Love you too Dani,” I hang up the phone and rest my head on the table.

After a while I go upstairs and check on Nick. He is still sound asleep in his bed, but his window is once again open. This frustrates me and I go downstairs, grab my tool box and nails, and nail the window shut. “I’ll bring in a fan when it gets too hot,” I say and carry my tool box back downstairs and place it back under the sink. I notice a pipe is leaking and take out my wrench. I fix the pipe and clean up the mess. I decide to clean the house and fix up things that need repairs. After several hours of repairing, cleaning, and testing out how well things work, I finally finish and decide it’s time to make supper. I go upstairs and see that Nick is awake. “Hey there baby,” I say smiling and pick him up out of his crib. “You hungwy?” I ask using a baby voice. He giggles and I take him downstairs. I set him in his highchair and make his baby formula. Once I have the bottle ready I pick him up again and feed him. After I’ve finished feeding him, I set the bottle down on the table and gently bounce him up and down patting his back. He burps a few time and I take him back up stairs for his nap. I gently rock him back and forth and hum twinkle twinkle little star. When he’s finally asleep I set him down gently in his crib and cover him with his baby blanket.

I go downstairs and fix my own supper. I make a bowl of chicken soup and crush crackers into it. Once I have finished eating I go upstairs and check on Nick. He’s still asleep and I notice the window had stayed shut this time. I enter Nick’s room and make sure the baby monitor is on. I then slowly make my way to my own room. Another baby monitor in my room. It’s on and I can hear Nick’s gentle breathing and the twinkle of his music box on his dresser. I put on my PJs and crawl into bed myself. As soon as my head hits the pillow I am out like a light.

In the morning I wake up to my alarm screaming. I hit the snooze button and take a shower and get dressed in black jeans and a black t-shirt. I walk into Nick’s room and see that the window I had nailed shut was now open. “How the hell does that keep happening??” I scream to myself.
