17 YEARS EARLIER

The playground outside the orphanage was desolate, with broken swings and rusted slides, as if it wasn't meant for children to play. The rooms were cramped and, because of the lack of space, the caretakers forced Colette, a 6-year-old girl that was obsessed with comic books, to abandon her enormous collection of books, pictures and action figures. Stubborn as she was, she put up a great fight for those books, ending up biting one of the teachers, which led to her getting a detention. The other kids were looking at her, as she was walking into the detention room, with fear in their eyes. There had been spread many frightening rumors about this room and the girl was about to confirm them herself. Sobbing on her way, Colette entered the detention room.
"Edgar, don't keep the lights turned off, it scares kids away!" The caretaker exclaimed and turned on the ceiling light. She let Colette get in and closed the door behind her. The little girl rubbed her eyes, clearing them from all the tears. She tilted her head, looking at the boy lying on the ground more closely. It was a boy around her age with black hair and a scarf wrapped around his neck. Colette approached the boy and stretched her arm, offering her hand for a handshake.
"Heyo! I'm Colette! Guess we'll spend some time here! Wanna be friends?"
Edgar, on the other hand, didn't seem to be so talkative. Colette kept the grin formed at the corners of her lips and caressed the fabric of the boy's scarf with her hand. Immediately, he backed off and shouted: "Don't touch the scarf!"
Colette made a grimace, making fun of Edgar's moody face, in an attempt to cheer him up. The boy rolled his eyes, but couldn't hold a light chuckle back.
"Ha! I knew it! We're friends!" Colette exclaimed and started to walk around, looking if there were any toys in the room.

Colette liked Edgar's company, even though they were nothing alike. She would deliberately get in trouble, so she could meet up with him and play in the detention room. Once, she had sneaked in the manager's office to take back some of her comics to show Edgar. Tonight, she was planning to get out alone after bedtime, so she would get another detention. She covered a couple of pillows under her blanket and quietly ran to the playground. It was windy and cold that night, but Edgar had thankfully trusted her to take his scarf. From the other side of the bars, she started to hear a noise, as if a baby was crying. She walked over to see what was going on.
"Whaaaat?" She squinted her eyes, only to see a small blue penguin struggling to walk on the street. "You need help little guy?" To her surprise, the bird turned to her and nodded. "Can.. can you help me?" He asked, showing his hurt wing, while shaking. Colette screamed and immediately covered her mouth. She leaned in closer to the bars. "How..? You talk..?" The girl decided to take the penguin with her, hiding it in her schoolbag. When she got in, she expectedly encountered the caretakers, who sent her back to the detention room. Quickly, she got there, after stealing a medkit from the bathroom.

"This is better than my fanfics!" Colette responded with enthusiasm, after the penguin explained to them how he got there. The experiments, the Starr Corporation, Crow, Gale... The kids took care of the bird's bleeding wing and gave him some food. He missed Gale and these two kids reminded him of the man who had saved him from the experiments.

Griff informed Mr. Paananen about the radio broadcast.
"Maybe he's not that useless after all..." The bird smirked and turned on the radio in his office, switching it to the pirate frequencies.

"...I repeat, stay away from the Snowtel! Watch out for doctors with the Starr sign and for a big man with a wrestling suit and a superhero lady..! They are mind-controlled! The evil penguin is behind all the plans!"
