At University, Mumbai:
It was a hot summer day. The University campus was alive with students bustling around, carrying books in their hands, chatting vivaciously, filling up the atmosphere with a vibrant energy, ready to start a new session. The University gate was wide open, allowing students to enter. This was one of those busy mid-year days, as the University welcomed freshers, to start a new journey of their lives.
A taxi came to a smooth stop infront of the grand University gate. A girl came out of the back seat, wearing a blue denim bottom, white top, blue shrug and black heels. Her long, dark brown hair, falling onto her back. Hoops dangling in her ears, she wore a light brownish shade of lipstick while her chocolate brown eyes remained untouched. She carried a backpack on one shoulder and what seemed like a guitar bag on another shoulder.
She was followed by two other girls. Both of them were wearing baggy jeans, one paired it with a white short kurti, while other wore it with a blue one. Their hair left open and minimal makeup on their faces. Each of the three had beautiful visuals and an attractive personality.
The two girls went to take out their luggage from the trunk of the taxi, while the first girl went to talk to the driver.
"HAWWW!", came from the first girl, "Station se yahan aane ke saadhe chaarso rupay!?"
(Four hundred and fifty rupees to come here from the station!?)The second girl came running, "Hein! Saadhe chaarso?"
(What! Four fifty?)"Dekh rahi hai Rukku, inhone to loot macha rakhi hai!", the first girl exclaimed.
(Are you seeing Rukku, they are looting people!)Rukku said, "Bhaiya, this little distance could have been covered very easily if we didn't have these luggage."
The third girl came and said, "Stop it, you both! It's just four fifty."
"What the fuck, Sristi! Just four fifty?", said the first girl.
"Tu hogi ameer, tere liye honge 'just four fifty'. Bhaiya, make it final in three hundred", the girl named Rukku said.
(You might be rich, it might be 'just four fifty' for you)Sristi handed over the money to the driver and said, "Whatever! Take it bhaiya. You may leave now." The taxi left. "And, you guys may pay your contribution later", she said to the other girls.
"You shouldn't have done that!", exclaimed the first girl with a little disapproval to her actions.
"Chhodo na ab! Apne peeche to dekho!" Sristi exclaimed.
(Let it be now! Look behind yourself!)They turned around to face the University. Their eyes widened with awe as they took the sight of the imposing stone buildings and the lively campus. The first girl's heart raced as she inhaled the fresh air, anticipation coursing through her veins at the sight of her dream University.
Rukku being the always cheerful one, her eyes shimmering, said, "We made it!! Can you believe it?"
Sristi, the practical one, nodded appreciatively. "It looked really good in pictures but it's even more impressive in person. Ready to make history, girls?"
The first girl turned to her friends, her smile radiant and full of determination. "Absolutely. Let's make this the best chapter of our lives." With a final, resolute glance at the university's iconic archway, she took her first step toward her future life, her friends by her side, ready to embrace all the challenges and adventures that awaited them.
Their next task was to find a hostel room for the three of them to stay together, which didn't seem so easy. And the chaos began over again.
"Sorry, we don't have rooms for three", the man at the office counter said. "You have to manage, two people in one room and the other one in another."
Sristi nodded at him and came to the other two girls, who were sitting on a bench nearby, with a sad face. "He said that they do not have rooms for three. We have to manage for two people in one room and the other one in another."
Silence took over them as the girls passed each other a disappointed glance. Rukku decided to break it and said with a fake assuring smile, "It's alright guys, we can still stay together all day. It's just the matter of night. I will take the other room, you guys should stay together."
The first girl cut her off, "No, we will stay together only. Wait, let me try once." With that she went to the office counter. "Sir, can you not figure out any way, please."
The man being understanding, thought for a moment and said, "There is a room where you three can stay together." The girls' face lit up with hope. "But....."
"BUT?", the girls said in unison.
"But the room is not for three, it's for four. You'll have to share it with someone"
"It's okay! Atleast we'll be together", said Sristi and the other two agreed with a nod.
"Right now there's no one staying in that room, so you guys will get your privacy. But you might have another roomate in the future."
"Yeah, it's alright!", the first girl exclaimed.
"You can go to the next counter to register your names and get the keys. Good luck!"
"THANK YOU!", as the girls thanked the man, they hugged among themselves, celebrating the moment as if it was a very big deal and their lives depended on it.
"One more problem solved.", Sristi said cheerfully. "Now let's go to the registration counter"
They were about to go towards the Counter, when Rukku's Stomach growled. The other two turned back to look at her.
"Hehe, I think I'm a bit hungry", Rukku said, smiling awkwardly, putting one hand on her stomach and the other scratching her nape. "Why don't we eat something first?"
The girls thought something for a moment. They have had a long journey in train, so they were obviously tired. They've had some light breakfast in the train, and it was noon now. So they agreed and decided to eat first and then go for the hostel registration.
"Yes, let's go have something from the canteen first. I'm hungry as well", the first girl said. "Me too, me too", the girl in blue kurti agreed and they made their ways towards the college mess.
The mess was filled with the aroma of freshly cooked Indian food. "Bhai, kya khushboo hai! Mere se to ruka hi nahi jaa tha", Rukku said being a little desperate to taste the food.
(Bro, what an aroma it is! I'm not able to control now)
The girls grabbed their plate and started taking the servings. They found a place to sit and had their lunch and a little chit-chat and after about twenty minutes, got out of the mess and went towards the registration counter. They talked to the authorities at the counter and fulfilled the requirements. The man at the counter asked, "So, what were your names again??"
"Rukmini Srivastav"
"Sristi Goenka"
"Tara Maheshwari "
"So, here are your keys. Room number 104", the man said, handing over the keys as the girl named Tara took them. She looked at the keys and smiled a little. The girls thanked the man and took their luggages and made their way towards their hostel room, or safe to say, 'Their new home'.🤍-----------------------------------🤍
