Two Cold Meals

You don't like a lot of things.

Some of your friends would call you picky, or choosy. Smart, but indecisive. Fun, but quiet. You were a complicated person from the start.

So when Cassie became your setter in your first year of playing for UST— she was determined to break all the rumors about you and become friends with someone so complicated. She liked the difficulty of solving you as if it were a puzzle. And you being you, you made it hard for her.

You were a very grumpy person when she first got to know you. You had a chaotic schedule since you were a nursing student and an athlete, so you were very stressed whenever you were at practice. Sometimes, you'd be staring at your iPad while everyone is doing their warmups and Cassie has to bring you out of your dilemma of practicing or studying.

"Huy, idol. Warm ups na 'raw. Baka mabalian ka mamayang practice pag di ka nag-exercise, bad pa naman yun." Cassie taps your shoulder, a smile on her face.

You look up at her, your iPad blinking off as you shut it down. Does she ever stop smiling?

"I know." You reply, hiding your iPad in your backpack as she stands there waiting for you. Your face turns into annoyance as you feel her lingering beside you. "What?"

"Wala, bawal ba intayin ka?"

She doesn't care about your short replies or your quietness during practice, it seemed like she was the only one you talked to during training. Everyone interacted with you, of course, but she was the only one who would reach out to talk to you.

And maybe her prayers were answered when you finally did start being friendly— well, maybe not friendly friendly, but friendly.

"Kain tayo labas guys?" Detdet questions. The training has just ended and everyone is exhausted and sweaty. All they're thinking of right now is a nice and delicious meal to finish their days and go back to studying.

The team replies to her with a chorus of agreement, some yelling at the excitement before getting a ball thrown at them by Detdet. "Hoy bakla, wag kang maingay! May nagprapractice sa kabila."

Cassie spots you at the corner of the gymnasium packing your bags, you already changed from your jersey and now you are wearing a UST team hoodie provided by the school— she noticed it's your favorite one to wear even in classes. Are you not going to eat with them?

"Psst, lodi ko." She approaches hands on the strap of her backpack.

You turn around to meet her eyes and you give her a curious look. "Hindi ka ba sasama samin? Treat 'raw ni Ate Detdet sa Shakeys." She gives you a hopeful look as if it would work on you, and you stay quiet for a moment.

"No, I have a Case study and an Essay to complete."

Cassie hums, "And kelan ba yan due?"

"On Thursday." You sighed, wanting to get this over with. You had your backpack on your back and at any moment you were ready to book it home. Cassie gives you her cheeky grin and you feel like she is about to say something as cheeky as her smile.

"It's Friday. May buong week kapa, sige na please!" She begs, putting her hands together into a praying position. "Like— kahit ngayon lang!"

You bite your cheek and your eye drifts to the ceiling. Your oral recitations just finished this morning and you did quite well, you did great on your chemistry quiz, and you have nothing to worry about right now except next week's assignments. You want to go home and just sleep. But Cassie stands there determined with a stupid pout begging you. Ba't ba tong atat na atat ako kasama?
