Lily and Alex returned to their room, the weight of the upcoming trip hanging over them. Lily tried to keep her spirits up, but Alex's cold demeanor made it hard.
"Should we pack some nice clothes for dinners in Paris?" Lily asked, trying to sound cheerful.
Alex barely looked up from his phone. "Whatever. Pack what you want," he replied, his tone indifferent.
Lily sighed, feeling a knot form in her stomach. She rummaged through her closet, pulling out dresses and outfits she thought might be suitable. "What about this one?" she asked, holding up a pretty floral jumpsuit.
"Sure, fine," Alex muttered, not even glancing at the dress.
Frustrated, Lily decided to pack on her own, hoping that maybe, just maybe, things would get better in Paris. She folded her clothes neatly, placing them in her suitcase with care. Meanwhile, Alex threw his clothes into his bag haphazardly, not bothering to fold them properly.
"Do you think we should bring some books or something for the flight?" Lily asked, trying to make conversation.
"I don't care," Alex snapped. "Just pack whatever you want."
Lily felt a pang of hurt at his words but tried to brush it off. She wanted to believe that this trip could help them, but Alex's attitude made it hard to stay hopeful. She decided to bring a couple of novels she liked, hoping they might distract her during the long flight.
As the evening wore on, the tension between them grew. Alex stayed glued to his phone, avoiding any interaction with Lily. He barely acknowledged her when she spoke, responding with short, curt answers.
Lily couldn't take it anymore. "Alex, why are you being like this?" she asked, her voice trembling with frustration.
"Like what?" Alex replied, his tone icy.
"Like you don't care about any of this," Lily said, her eyes filling with tears. "We're supposed to be trying to make this work, and you're acting like I'm not even here."
Alex sighed, finally looking up from his phone. "I didn't ask for this, Lily," he said, his voice flat. "This trip, this marriage... it wasn't my choice."
"But we're in this together now," Lily said, wiping away a tear. "Can't you at least try to make it work?"
Alex stared at her for a moment, then shook his head. "I'll try, but don't expect miracles," he said, his tone softening slightly.
The rest of the evening passed in silence, both of them lost in their own thoughts. Lily finished packing her suitcase and placed it by the door. She glanced at Alex, who had fallen asleep on the bed, his phone still in his hand. She sighed, feeling a mix of sadness and determination.
As she turned off the lights and climbed into bed, she hoped that Paris might bring some much-needed change. But deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty that lingered in her heart.
The next morning, they headed to the airport in silence. Alex barely spoke a word, his expression distant and unapproachable. Lily tried to make small talk, but his cold replies made it clear he wasn't interested.
As they boarded the plane and settled into their seats, Lily looked out the window, watching the world go by. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing thoughts.
"Maybe Paris will be different," she thought to herself. "Maybe we can find a way to make this work."
But as the plane took off, the silence between them felt heavier than ever. And as they flew towards the city of love, Lily couldn't help but wonder if they would ever find the happiness they both deserved.
