✦ Rooftops ✦

3 am. The perfect time to sneak up to the rooftop and eat your bar of chocolate in secret without the pleading eyes of Toga wanting a piece. She always ended up with the whole bar in her hands and left you feeling sad and chocolateless.

You reached the top of the staircase and pushed the door open, welcoming the cool breeze that swept over your face. It was early winter, meaning the winds were getting chillier and nights were growing colder. Still, you enjoyed being outside despite the cold.

Stepping out onto the roof, you were surprised to find that you weren't alone. Off to your left stood the familiar form of Shigaraki. He had the hood of his jacket pulled up and you could see the occasional breath of air coming from his mouth due to the cold.

From where you stood, he looked to be pretty deep in thought, so to avoid startling him (and to avoid your past mistakes of scaring him and almost getting cremated), you started slowly approaching him, clearing your throat to make yourself known.

Shigaraki turned around to look at you, his face void of the usual hand that adorned it. It was rare for the man to remove 'father', so to see him without it felt almost illegal. The two of you stood looking at each other for a few moments, you too afraid to say anything in fear of angering the man, and Shigaraki making no move to place 'father' back on his face.

After a tense silence, Shigaraki spoke up.

"Bit late for you to be up." His voice was scratchy as if he hadn't spoken in a good few hours.

"I could say the same for you," you answered, flashing him a small smile.

Shigaraki tore his gaze away from you to stare out at the city again as he let out a sigh. You took it as a sign that he probably didn't want to talk about what was on his mind. He seldom did, but every so often he would confide in a comrade, even if only to vent a minor frustration. This felt like something bigger though.

Saying nothing, you took the chocolate bar you snuck up from your hoodie's pocket and tore the wrapper open. The noise of the foil brought his attention back to you and he eyed you curiously. You broke off a piece and offered it to Shigaraki, causing his eyes to narrow further.

"I'm only offering once," you said, urging Shigaraki to take the piece of chocolate.

He did so, reluctantly taking the piece from your hand and moving to eat it.

Satisfied, you began to eat the rest of your treat, standing next to Shigaraki and looking out at the city as well. A feeling of tranquility washed over you, with the cool wind blowing every now and then, and Shigaraki standing next to you in silence.

Eventually, though, you broke the silence, curiosity getting the better of you. "Why are you up here?"

At first, Shigaraki stood unmoving and silent, causing you to think that he didn't hear you. As you opened your mouth to ask again, he spoke.

"Do you ever feel like you're just my pawn?"

You turned your gaze to Shigaraki, your brows scrunched in confusion. He continued to stare in front of him, a contemplative look on his face. He stayed quiet as he waited for your answer.

"Could you elaborate?" you asked, wanting a bit more context. Classifying yourself as a pawn could mean many things after all.

Shigaraki took a breath. "Do you ever feel like you're just there to do my bidding? Like you're disposable and I could get rid of you any time I wanted?"

You considered his questions. As you looked at him, his eyes lit up by the city lights, you realized that there was a deeper meaning to his questions. Shigaraki often did this to face his own problems. It's something you've learned over the time you've gotten to know him. He would often turn his questions about his own situation to someone else and solve the problem using their input.

With a hum, you averted your gaze from Shigaraki and looked out at the city once more. "No. I've never felt like a pawn." You paused, thinking of how to best phrase your feelings. "I joined the League because our views aligned. I want a better society too, and if that means killing the Symbol of Peace, I'll do everything in my power to make that happen."

Shigaraki turned to look at you, an unreadable emotion in his eyes.

"I'll be honest, back then, I didn't think the League would be anything special..."

"Gee thanks," Shigaraki sarcastically mumbled, earning a small laugh from you.

"But...over time, I've come to realize that the people I've met in the League are irreplaceable. We've all had a shitty life in this society and now it's time we change that."

With a smile, you turned to look at Shigaraki again, catching his gaze.

"We'll stand by your side Tomura. Always. Not as your pawns, but as your friends."

Shigaraki considered your words, his lips tugging up into a small smile before he turned away and took 'father' from his hoodie pocket, placing it back on his face.

"Thank you."
