❛ we used to be best friends, and now you can barely look me in the eye. ❜

He didn't know why he was painted as arch enemy nr 1 to the world.

Sure, he wasn't the easiest person on earth and he spoke his mind.

But.... The way some people painted him as was just vile and disgusting.

He was glad for the people who looked deeper than that.

The people who still got his back.

But - - -

No matter how hard the words of people he didn't even know were, nothing, absolutely nothing hit as hard as his childhood friend ignoring him.

Not just ignoring, he literally didn't even look at him anymore.

He literally ran away from him that one time on the paddock.

Even living in the same building together was a chance to play hide and seek for Lewis apparently.

Nico, even though he wouldn't admit it to the world out loud, was hurt by those actions.

He would confront the other man, but, as said before; Lewis didn't want to be around him.

But as it usually goes, hide and seek can't last forever. And at some point, the two had to face each other.

Of course it was in the elevator.

Lewis was gonna take it back up, because he didn't feel like carrying Roscoe up the stairs, when someone called out frantically to hold the door.

Blame his distracted mind for not immediately realizing who it was and so he dutifully held open the elevator's doors.

To his credit, Nico looked very surprised and confused as well when he stumbled into the elevator and saw Lewis there.

Roscoe let out a huff, sniffed at Nico's leg, then rubbed his head against it.

At least one of the two seemed to be happy to see the blonde man.

The silence was deafening.

They were almost at Lewis' floor, Nico living one floor above him, when Nico decided he had enough.

He slammed the emergency button, making the elevator halt.

Seeing Lewis' shocked expression was so worth the action.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Stopping you from running away from me this time."

Lewis scoffed and tried to reach past Nico to push the button again so they would start moving again, but Nico grabbed his wrist.

Lewis' eyes widened, "What the fuck is your problem, man?"

"You!" Nico blurted out, "You are my problem!"

Lewis just stared at a spot over Nico's shoulder.

Even now he couldn't even look at him - - -

"We used to be best friends, and now you can barely look me in the eye."

Lewis does look at him this time.

"We're not friends."

Those words still sting. Even hearing them a second time.

"But we're something. Please tell me we're still something."

He hates the begging tone of his voice and how it breaks at the end.

Lewis untangles Nico's fingers from his wrist and and the blond lets his hand drop.

His head drops too, not stopping Lewis this time from putting the elevator back in motion.

It's silent.

The only sounds are their breathing and Roscoe's pants.

And the typical elevator sounds of course.

The elevator stops. The doors slide open and Lewis is ready to walk out.

He stops in the middle of the doors, delaying them from closing, he looks back over his shoulder.

"We'll always be something."

Nico is too stunned to speak.

Lewis turns his head forward and steps into the hallway, letting the doors slide closed behind him.

Something is always better than nothing.
