For this prompt:

A 'you are safe here' for JB/Nico when Nico actually broke down after winning the championship 🥹

It finally happened. He finally did it.

Not only did he receive the most points out of every driver on the grid, he also beat his childhood friend.

His biggest rival.

Everything he'd done, good and bad, had paid off.

Because boy, did he pay the price.

He lost his best friend.

Because they are both competitors. Stubborn ones.

That's a gift and a curse at the same time, to be that way.

But all of that didn't matter this time.

He won.

He really, really won.

Yet----

What was this feeling?

This numbness.

"Congratulations, Britney!!!!" Jenson yelled, as soon as he opened his hotel room door for him.

Nico didn't really know why he came here. It was just the first place his mind and his feet dragged him off to. And before he knew it, he was knocking on the Brit's door.

His face remained stoic and emotionless, even through Jenson's excited screams and back pats.

Realizing that Nico wasn't hugging him back, Jenson placed his hands on Nico's shoulders and pushed him back at arms length.

"Hello? Mister world champion?" he tried to get a reaction. "Anybody home?"

He was starting to get slightly worried.

"Nico? Come on, mate. You've got to give me something here."

That's when Nico slowly lifted his head up and Jenson's breath stopped for a moment.

Nico's eyes were hollow, but, big tears were rolling down his face.

Not knowing what else to do, Jenson wrapped his arms around Nico, who let out a pained sound.

Jenson tried to shush him. To comfort him.

"It's okay," he kept on whispering like a mantra. "You're safe here."

All of his insides were screaming to protect the shell of a man who was now sobbing in his arms.

He didn't know why Nico was like this. What had happened to him, he could only guess. But it didn't matter.

No world champion was supposed to look so broken.
