For the first time since I arrived I felt hope that I could figure everything out. The spell would not only stop Jekyll and Moriarty but bring me home. How wonderful it would be to go back to my century. Perhaps I could write a book about my adventures here and become a real detective.
“I can change what went wrong.” I whispered.
Some of Moriarty's words still played in my head like a broken record. I pushed her away instead of turning to her for comfort. Of course she was still a psycho but maybe she didn't have to be. My thoughts were interrupted when Alexandria came back with the objects I needed.
“Here we are, I got what you needed from the hotel. Who knew Kitsune super speed would come in handy.” she said. Her white and red tipped hair was all wet as it had rained a bit while she was out.
“Guess it couldn't stop the rain huh.” I joked.
Her brown eyes turned in a split second and flashed to an orange color. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I put my hands up.
“Would you like to challenge that?” she asked.
“No I was kidding Alexandria, can we please have playful banter later after all this is solved.” I responded. Her face broke into a mischievous grin as she laughed at my fear. I rolled my eyes as I didn't pick up that she was pulling my leg.
“I can't believe you fell for that.” Alexandria giggled.
“Yeah very mature, I guess the lore was right about your trickster-like behavior.” I said.
“Oh there's nothing better than playing tricks on those who deserve it.” she responded. I once again rolled my eyes as she handed me all the items she had found. First I placed Hannah's old hat and the scale into the boiling water. It changed the water to a bright blue color that matched the blood on my hand. Right after I grabbed Alexandria's knife and used it to take a few hairs from Connor's old toy. He watched me without blinking once until I returned it.
“Here we go. Thank you.” I said. He gave me no response, just a firm nod and I went back to work.
The cauldron bubbled as I added: the ash from the headless horseman, a bat wing, Dorian Gray's picture frame, and Frankenstein's potion. My eyes went wide to see the water change from blue to green. It looked almost like a river of green fire rocks the more I gazed upon it. I brushed off the blood from the letter opener and dropped it inside as well. A puff of smoke from the cauldron made me cough a bit. I finished off the spell by adding Alexandria’s knives and the few hairs. Now all I needed was Hyde's hat.
However when I took the hat I could tell something was wrong. The leather on the hat looked too new and clean instead of worn down.
“What is it?” Alexandria asked.
“This isn't Hyde's hat, it's a fake.” I said.
Right as I said that the sound of clapping filled my ears as someone walked into the library. At first glance it appeared to just be the Butler until he dropped to the ground dead. Someone had stabbed him multiple times with something dull to make his death slow and painful. Then snapped his neck with their bare hands and took a bite out of what was left. Jekyll stood behind him with a bloody cane and his vampire fangs for all to see.
“Congratulations Clara you figured it out, I suppose you've got a little Sherlock Holmes in you after all.” he taunted.
Everyone in the room got tense, especially with the revelation that he had killed again. I lost track of what number his kill count was at this point. It seems that like a spider he waited until our guard was down. It made me hate the man even more as I feared what he might do. If he knew about our plan then how were we going to use the spell on him now.
