The chapter began at Beach Citywalk Fries, where the air was thick with the scent of fried food and salt from the nearby ocean. Steven and Amethyst charged to the counter just as Mr. Fryman was closing up, laughter in their voices as they hurriedly made their request.
"Hey, Fryman, give me the bits and curly fries for Y/n!" Steven called, his eyes bright with excitement.
Mr. Fryman, who had just turned the "We're Closed!" sign over, gave them a tired look. "End of the day, Steven," he said, but his voice held a hint of a smile.
Steven's face fell in exaggerated disappointment. "Aww, come on!"
Amethyst, always one to go the extra mile, slammed her hands down on the counter and chanted, "We want the bits! The BITS and fries!" Her voice was infectious, and soon Steven was joining in.
Together, they pounded on the counter, their chanting rising in volume, turning what might have been an average evening at Beach Citywalk Fries into an impromptu show.
"The BITS and fries! The BITS and fries!"
The words echoed through the boardwalk, drawing curious glances from passersby as they grinned and let themselves get swept up in the moment. Their energy was undeniable, a reminder of the joy in simple things—and the anticipation of a snack shared with friends.
Mr. Fryman, finally giving in, held up his hands in mock defeat. "Alright, alright! Ease up on the counter!" He disappeared into the back with a sigh, returning a moment later with two paper bags.
Steven and Amethyst exchanged a triumphant high-five. "Yes!"
Mr. Fryman handed over the bags with a knowing smile. "Here you go, bits and fries. I can throw in some extra fries like Y/n likes if you want."
Steven beamed, grateful. "Just the bits, please." Taking the bags, he added, "Thanks!"
With their prize in hand, Steven and Amethyst wandered back along the boardwalk, each savoring the crispy remnants of fries and fry bits. Sunset cast a warm glow over Beach City, turning the horizon into a beautiful canvas of pink and orange as they drifted closer to the beach.
"Ah, sunset," Steven said, his gaze softening as he looked toward the sea. "My favorite time of day. When the sun goes down and the second sun gets bigger and bigger in the sky."
Amethyst snickered, leaning into the moment. "Yeah, that big hot second su—" But then her voice caught, and her eyes widened with sudden realization. Her gaze shifted to the sky, and Steven followed it, his brow furrowing.
"What is it?" Steven barely managed to get out before Amethyst suddenly scooped him up, her expression shifting from amusement to shock.
"Whoa, what's that doing here?" she breathed, her voice tinged with urgency.
In the chaos, Steven watched helplessly as the bags of bits and fries slipped from his grasp, tumbling to the boardwalk below. "Ah, my bits! And Y/n's fries!"
But in that instant, everything else faded into the background. Above them, an ominous shape hung in the sky—a massive, shadowy silhouette descending from the heavens.
Ignoring the fallen fries, Amethyst carried Steven swiftly across the boardwalk, her eyes never leaving the ominous orb in the sky. They sprinted toward the beach near the Crystal Temple, where Garnet, Y/n, and Pearl were already gathered, observing the strange phenomenon through a telescope.
Garnet, her expression tense beneath her visor, muttered, "This is bad."
Pearl peered into the lens, her brow furrowing. "Look at the size of it! I had no idea these things could be so massive."
