Yang Zhilan stepped out of the office with Supervisor Xi, her mind racing. For days now, he had been inviting her to his office frequently throughout the day. Mostly, he just talked about work—nothing ambiguous—but she felt he could avoid calling her into his office so many times.
After going to a dinner with him the last time, they had become faux-friends of a sort and she didn't know how to react to it, just going with the flow.
Returning to her desk, she barely had a moment to settle before Sister Xin leaned in, curiosity etched on her face.
"What did he want again?" Sister Xin asked.
Yang Zhilan sighed and shook her head. "Just work stuff and errands. Nothing serious."
"Oh," Sister Xin said, her tone shifting.
She couldn't understand why Supervisor Xi couldn't delegate these tasks to his assistant. Instead, he called on her, and she was really getting tired of the constant trips to his office.
" Um , Shanshan can you pass me the stapler?" Yang Zhilan requested.
Wu Shanshan passed her the stapler without so much as glance at her and she had a feeling why that was .
Yang Zhilan felt the urge to explain herself but held back. She didn't want to confront her coworkers.
Sister Xin seemed to remember and exclaimed"By the way Zhilan, Mr. Qin came here just now. You're needed in Mr. Xi's office."
"Okay, thank you." Yang Zhilan stood up again, feeling the weight of the day settle on her shoulders. She headed towards the CEO's office.
When she arrived, she saw Mr. Xi and Mr. Qin preparing to leave. Mr. Qin was packing up some files and Mr. Xi was on a phone call. Taking a deep breath, she entered the room.
"Um, you called, Mr. Qin?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Yes, where have you been? It's been a while since I asked for you." Mr. Qin's tone was sharp, his eyes focused intently on her.
"Uh, the thing is, Supervisor Xi called me into his office and..." Yang Zhilan trailed off, unsure how to finish. She didn't want to sound like she was making excuses.
"And run some errands," she added quickly.
She didn't miss the piercing stare of the CEO, and she ducked her head as Mr. Xi finished his call. The tension in the room was palpable.
Mr. Qin nodded, "I see. Well, Miss Yang, we have an emergency meeting. Please pack up as we won't be returning to the office today."
Yang Zhilan nodded, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension.
She quickly packed up her bag from desk and met Mr Qin and her CEO in the parking lot. Mr Qin handed over some documents over to her and went to the drivers seat to drive.
Yang Zhilan watched as Mr Xi got in at the backseat quietly. Yang Zhilan contemplated for a moment and decided to sit at the passenger seat by Mr Qin.
On the way, Yang Zhilan could help but look at rearview mirror multiple times as she caught sight of Mr Xi's expression.
She didn’t mean to stare, but her eyes lingered on his reflection. Mr. Xi’s usually composed face was marred by a slight frown, his lips pressed together in a way that made them look fuller than usual.
His brow was furrowed, and his gaze was directed out the window, avoiding her eyes.
Like anytime their eyes accidentally met he would be the first to turn away.
