After watching Song Jieli returned to their group, settling back into her seat, Zhilan found herself wondering about Xi Jinwei's absence. The party was in full swing, yet the man who seemed to be on everyone's mind was nowhere to be seen.
She took another sip, feeling the warmth of the alcoholic drink spread through her. She wasn't used to drinking, and already she could feel its effects.
A sudden hush fell over the room, followed by a swell of excited murmurs. Yang Zhilan turned to see Mr Xi entering the room, his presence commanding attention effortlessly.
He moved with easy grace, his tailored suit accentuating his tall frame. Despite his late arrival, his oh-so warm smile seemed to charm everyone instantly.
Ye Gusuo, standing arm-in-arm with his fiancée, laughed good-naturedly. "I thought you wouldn't be coming."
"Urgent business, I'm afraid," he explained, his voice carrying across the room.
"I'll forgive you, Jinwei, but only if you've brought a suitable gift!" Ye Gusuo's fiancée said.
The room filled with laughter, the atmosphere lightening further. Yang Zhilan watched as Mr Xi produced an elegantly wrapped package, presenting it to the couple.
Her gaze then shifted to Song Jieli, who approached Mr Xi with a small box in hand after he sat down.
Yang Zhilan's breath caught as she watched Song Jieli present the jade cufflinks, her hands lingering as she gave it to him. Unable to watch the scene further, Yang Zhilan turned back to the window, taking a large sip of her wine.
She was still contemplating on all that Shen Hui told her earlier.
"Has anyone seen Yang Zhilan?" Song Jieli's voice carried across the room, a note of curiosity - or was it suspicion? - in her tone.
Yang Zhilan tensed, pretending not to hear as she kept her gaze fixed on the city below. The wine was starting to make her head buzz, and she silently chastised herself for drinking too quickly.
" Yang Zhilan?" She heard Mr Xi ask curiosity colouring his tone.
" Yes ,your assistant. I saw her and decided to invite her."
Yang Zhilan watched the exchange, an inexplicable heaviness settling in her chest. She turned back to the window, taking a larger sip of wine than she intended.
She should probably go home now as it was getting late.
Suddenly, she felt a presence beside her. The reflection in the window and the refreshing scent of lavender confirmed what her racing heart already knew. She took a deep breath, willing her nerves to steady as she turned to face him.
"Good evening, Ms. Yang," Xi Jinwei said, his voice low.
Yang Zhilan met his gaze, feeling a flutter in her stomach that had nothing to do with the wine.
"Mr. Xi," she managed, her voice steadier than she felt.
As they stood there, the sounds of the party seemed to fade into the background. In that moment, it felt as if they were the only two people in the room, the city lights twinkling behind them like a thousand silent witnesses.
" Mr Xi." She called out again ,this time with more determination.
"Hm?"
"I never thanked you properly," she blurted out, her usual reserve weakened by the wine. "For the hospital bills, and for checking on me. It-It meant a lot."
