The first years of Beacon follow Professor Goodwitch through a forest filled with trees covered in red leaves. The gentle breeze makes the leaves continuously fall from the trees and gently to the forest floor, covering the ground in a similar red sight. The students all look around in awe at the sight until Professor Goodwitch catches their attention. "Yes students, the forest of Forever Fall is indeed beautiful, but we are not here to sightsee. Professor Peach has asked all of you to collect samples from the trees deep inside this forest, and I'm here to make sure none of you die while doing so." She stops and turns to the students, making them stop as well. "Each of you is to gather one jar's worth of red sap. However, this forest is full of the creatures of Grimm, so be sure to stay by your teammates. We will rendezvous back here at four o'clock. Have fun!" With that everyone starts heading their separate ways with Cardin dragging Jaune with him. C carries the jars for his team and team RWBY as they head deeper into the forest. Ruby looks at a tree before looking at the tree tap every student was given.
"So um... How do these work again?" Weiss looks over at Ruby.
"Were you not paying attention when Professor Peach told us yesterday?"
"I was! I'm just more of a uh... visual learner! Yeah!" C chuckles at Ruby before pulling his tap out while setting the jars down.
"I can explain it to her, Snowbird." Weiss nods and continues looking for a suitable tree. C holds the tap out and points to one end of it. "This is where the sap will come out, and this is the side you hammer into the trunk."
"But how will I know if I got a good tree or the right spot?" C smiles wide.
"That... I don't know!" Ruby is shocked by that answer. "But that's what we have Levi for!" Levi turns at his name being called as he's filling up a jar of sap.
"Hm?"
"Levi, you mind explaining the finer details of this again?" Levi nods while placing a lid on his jar and pointing to his tap in the tree.
"Sure. So these trees are actually tapped a lot of the time because of how sweet the sap is, apparently. I'm not sure, I've never had it." Ruby tilts her head.
"How do you know they've been tapped before." Levi points to another tree near him.
"That hole right under that thick branch. That's what will be left once I pull this tap out the tree. The tree will them begin repairing it over time and it'll come out like that. So what you want to do is find a tree with a close to repaired hole or no hole at all. Then look for a thick branch and place your tap under it, or you look for a thick root and place your tap above it. It's not too hard, but it'll take some time before you're a pro at it." Ruby nods at his words while fiddling with her tap. "I can help you, if you like?"
"Yes, please." With that Levi leads Ruby to a tree and starts helping her as C walks to find his own tree. He spots Arsenic and Olive filling up their jars, Weiss, unsuccessfully, trying to clean the red sap from her sleeves, Blake reading a book with her jar already full, and Ryuko stabbing her tap into a tree. He walks up to a tree and pokes a hole into it with his claws before hammering his tap in with a single knock. He places his jar under the tap and waits for it to fill up before taking a drop of it and licking it off his finger. It's sweet and thick, but not too rich like store bought syrup is. His mind immediately starts thinking of ways to use it as he fills up more jars for himself. While he's so focused, Yang sneaks up behind him with her full jar in hand. She sees the six or so jars C has as he types away on his phone.
"What's got you so excited?" C turns and sees Yang before putting his phone away in his pocket.
"Thinking of ways to use this sap, aside from the grade we're here to earn."
