No one had adopted him yet.
Hideki pretended to not notice, but he knew that the couple were getting anxious. They could not adopt the boy- the HPSC had restricted them from doing so. Thus, Aizawa and Hizashi were on a mission to find parents for Hideki.
"C'monn, you remember that kid, right?" Hizashi said exasperatedly. Hunter and he had arrested a villain a few minutes ago and were now driving back to Hunter's agency.
"How can I forget?" Hunter answered, clenching the steering wheel. "You know why I'm hesitant."
"...It's been years man. I'm not telling you to move on, it's just that Kin wouldn't have wanted you to-"
Hunter interrupted coldly. "Those wishes died with her."
Hizashi stayed silent, taken aback by the uncharacteristic response. "...Look, just- meet him once, okay?"
Hunter hesitated, before agreeing, "Alright."
So here he was, in front of the couple's house. Hunter ruffled his fur in frustration. Ryujin rolled her eyes, crossing her arms, "I agree with them."
"Look, I'll meet him, but that doesn't mean I'll adopt him." Hunter winced, that sounded mean. "I'll certainly help."
Ryujin observed the house. "That kid, Hideki, doesn't he look a lot like her? Kin looked like him when she was a child-"
"Stop talking about Kin goddamnit."
"..." Ryujin stayed silent, used to his recent outbursts. "What do you think of Hideki?" She moved on calmly.
Hunter was quiet, silently beating himself over snapping like that. "He's a good kid. There's nothing there that should stop me from adopting him but..."
"Let's just move on from that topic."
"Yeah," Hunter nodded, grateful.
The duo knocked on the door. A few seconds later it was flung open, "Heyy guys!" Hizashi greeted excitedly. "You're just in time!"
"Happy Christmas," Hunter greeted back. The ceilings were tall, so Hunter could comfortably enter. They followed Hizashi, entering the sunken living room. Some other friends were there too- Rumi, Kugo, Tsunagu, Tatsuma, Shino, Tsuchikawa, Yawara and the newbie, Keigo.
Aizawa was nowhere to be seen. "Where's Aizawa?" Ryujin asked. "Nemuri as well..."
"He'll be down in a minute. Nemuri couldn't make it 'cause of work," Hizashi grinned. "Let's eat and then par-tay!!"
"Hell yeah!" Rumi laughed. The other heroes were amused too, smiling and laughing at his behaviour. It was the same every year, but just as entertaining. Hunter placed his and Ryujin's gifts under the tree and sat down. A door upstairs creaked open, soft voices mumbling to each other as they approached the stairs.
No one else could hear them over the talking and laughing. Hunter turned his head to look at the stairs. Just as expected, Aizawa came downstairs, Hideki close behind. Hideki noticed Hunter's gaze immediately and flinched a little. They made it to the foot of the stairs.
"Oh hey, you're late, were ya sleeping or somethin'-" Rumi's eyes widened. "Who's kid is that?"
Hideki hid behind Aizawa, peeking out from his spot. Aizawa sighed as he spoke, "This is Hideki. He's been staying with us for a few months now."
"Hideki, huh?" Rumi smirked. "The two of you got yourselves a kid?"
Aizawa gave Rumi a deadpan look. "We didn't 'get' ourselves a kid. He needed a place to stay temporarily, that's all."
