Lani Page takes us through the chapters of tears on the page
The singer/songwriter talks about the meaning behind her songs, her new-found fame and her personal life.
Lani Page may just have the most crazy story behind her new album, starting right back from her birth. The name tears on the page features the clever double meaning with her middle name being Paige, and she speaks about why she chose to use her middle name instead of her last name on all her songs.
"I always loved my middle name, my Grandma always called me Lani Paige when I was younger and it just kind of stuck. Being a singer/songwriter I just knew I had to use Lani Paige, but changed the spelling to Page. Using my last name (Moore) doesn't feel right because it isn't really mine, it's my grandmother's".
Up until now, Lani has been extremely private with stories from her past and personal life, but she shared her history with us for the first time.
"My parents left me when I was a infant. My father wasn't ready for a child, so he took off. my mother on the other hand, loved me so much, but I reminded her of the partner she didn't have anymore, so she left me with her parents. My grandmother's maiden name was Moore, so I adopted that."
When asked if she wished she had grown up differently, Lani said she wouldn't change a thing. Changing it meant she wouldn't have the amazing half siblings she does have, or having her best friend.
It is well known that Lani is lifelong best friends with Formula One driver Logan Sargeant and she opened up to us about their friendship.
"Yeah, I've been friends with Logan since I was born, basically. Our grandparents were really close friends so we grew up together. He is the most amazing person ever, and he is always the first person I play songs to, tell secrets to and yeah, he's just the best."
"Without Logan, I would have never moved to England. He moved to pursue his karting career and I went with him to a boarding school. That's where I met some of my other best friends."
Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter, Laufey and Madelyn Cline are all extremely close friends, and they have been since high school. The group met during their time in boarding school and have stayed friends since leaving.
"We weren't all the same age, but our school was skill based instead of age based, so we had a few classes in the arts together. They were some of the first people I showed my album to."
tears on the page features a tracklist of heartbreak songs, which are extremely different to her first EP Burning Red. We asked Lani whether she could tell us who they were about.
"I will never reveal who the songs are about without the other person's permission, and frankly I don't have that. I respect him so much and he is one of the best people I have met so there is no way I could do that to him. So my answer for now is no."
"I think he would know the songs are about him. He must. I didn't ask for his permission to write these songs, but he must have heard them and known. The clues are so vague and generic unless you know the story behind them."
tears on the page has such gut wrenching lyrics, from 'you're good at impersonating someone who cares' to the more upbeat 'i feel so much lighter like a feather with you out my life'.
"My favorite lyric from the album, mm that's a hard one. I think 'I wonder how many things you think about before you get to me' involved the most tears on the page. That song was really hard to write and that's why it's the track 5."
Lani Page took a leaf out of Taylor Swift's book, in making her track 5 the most personal song to her.
"I admire Taylor so much, and any chance I get to praise her I will. She has been my favorite singer for years now, from when I was 5 and dancing around to Our Song not knowing anything, to going to the Reputation Stadium Tour with my friends."
"I was so shocked when Taylor said yes to Gracie and I covering her song, it felt like a dream come true. Breathe has been a favorite of ours forever and it felt amazing to release our version of it."
Another artist besides Lani's best friend Gracie that features on the album is Australian singer Dean Lewis. Dean Lewis is a new artist known for his song Be Alright, which has featured successfully on the Australian charts.
"He (Dean Lewis) is so amazing to work with. I heard Be Alright and was like, woah, I need to collab with this guy. I messaged him and was like 'hey do you want to work on something together' and maybe three days later 7 minutes was written."
It is no surprise that since the release of tears on the page, Lani has found some new fans and a new-found fame. She describes this as 'a surreal feeling that she had only ever dreamed about since she was a kid'.
tears on the page is a true breakup album, but there may be a new chapter in Lani's life being written. We asked her if there is a new guy in her life yet, to which she smiled shyly and responded 'not yet'.
Daydreaming about going on tour, Lani said she would love to release more music and hopefully perform a worldwide tour in the future.
