Her breath got caught in her throat when she saw the empty bed at the medical wing, her eyes scanning the room desperately, not wanting to cling to the first scenario that popped to her head: the sickness got her mother and she wasn't there by her side.
Luckily, before the panic could hit, Dr. Jackson noticed her confused gaze and explained how she was taken to the airlock chamber. She fiscally felt her heart sinking. Suddenly she was on autopilot, without even realizing her legs where sprinting before the doctor could finish his sentence.
She couldn't believe they didn't tell her. She couldn't believe her mother was about to get floated and she would've been robbed even of her goodbyes.
The sound of her stomps matched the accelerated beat of her heart and soon she finds herself in front of her worst nightmare. Except it isn't a dream. Chancellor Jaha, standing proudly as he voices the accusations, Councilor Kane, staring into the eyes of his friend knowing he will be haunted by this moment forever and Councilor Griffin, looking away and holding back tears. All in front of the air lock chamber, while her father is being held back by two guards and her mother is standing behind the glass doors, looking down.
"No!" She lets out in a high pitched tone making everyone turn their heads.
Mother and daughter lock eyes and they can see each of their hearts breaking apart with the realization that this is their final memory. Her father seizes his fighting against the guards, shocked to see his daughter. The kid runs towards the end of the corridor but one of the guards holds her back. Everyone protests, even Jaha.
"Let her go." He states simply and the guard eases his grip on the girl's arm.
She resumes her way towards the glass doors and kneels in front of her mom, who mimics her movements. The mother covers her mouth as she sobs uncontrollably with the sight of her kid crying on the floor begging her not to go.
"Why are they doing this?" The little girl asks still so confused.
"Baby, it's okay. Everything works out in the end." The mother promises, but the girl only cries harder. "Repeat after me, Baby, please." She pleads, putting a hand on the glass.
Her daughter does her best to raise her head and cease her cries, copying the hand movement. "Everything works out in the end." She says quietly, in-between sobs and not so confidently.
Her mom would always repeat those words when things were going bad and she was usually right, somehow things do get back into place and life goes on. But, no matter how much she wanted to believe her mother's words, the girl couldn't bring herself to think of a scenario where anything would work out right now.
"Claire," The older one raises her head at the mention of her name. "it's time." Jaha concludes.
Claire nods reluctantly and squeezes her eyes shut before looking back to her daughter. "I love you so much, Nix, don't ever forget that."
"Please, mom." Nix cries as she realizes the moment she's been trying to delay is coming.
"Everything works out in the end." Her mom repeats again and gets up.
Before the girl gets the chance to reply she feels hands wrapping around her arms and lifting her off the ground. She protests immediately, trying to get out of that firm grip but since she is just a 12 year old, she fails miserably. They start to drag her away, away from her mom and every inch of distance between them is one more crack in Nix's heart.
