Deneo has the talk with her sister: even revealing why she stopped speaking to Lucky in the first place. Dolly is distraught. "How could you not have told me our mother was dying! She yells at Deneo.
Deneo fumbles, then mumbles: "I was trying to protect her."
"Protect her how? By sitting around doing nothing? We should have gotten her to a hospital in time had we known how serious her condition was. What you did was so selfish! I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye," she hails before crying, walking out on Deneo. Deneo is overwhelmed with emotion, led to tears herself.
But it would have scared Dolly had Deneo told her the truth. Then she would have said their fear of their mother's death is what brought it about. She also could have died as a result of some maltreatment or negligence in hospital. To Deneo things seemed inevitable; no matter which direction the course took, it all lead to the same destination - they were bereaved.
Deneo calls Dolly and receives no response. Nate knocks on the bedroom door asking what happened to Dolly, she came out of their (Dolly and Deneo's) room crying. Deneo reluctantly explains what happened and Nate is in shock, but as expected by Deneo he is level-headed about the news: he takes it a whole lot better than Dolly, empathising with Deneo that she had to deal with the perpetual fear of their mother's eminent death. He only expresses his wish that he could have been tipped off. How though? He himself didn't know.
Deneo asks Nate to call Dolly and get her to come home. Nate calls and Dolly answers, thankfully. It sounds as if Dolly is at her boyfriend's apartment - a ten-minute walk away from them. Deneo is relieved: at least she knows where she is, and that she's safe there.
In the middle of the night Deneo wakens to a call from Lucky, she presumes. "Hey, is it you Lucky?"
"Yes darling, it's me. I'm calling from the hotel. Sorry, did I wake you? I've been travelling all morning, and the bit of the afternoon, so I couldn't find the right time to call..."
"Uhm, yes... I was sleeping", she expresses before yawning, tapping her face to vivify herself.
"Should I have called earlier? I can call you later then-"
"No, it's alright, please just give me a minute...to wake up," she expresses before groggily standing to open a window wider.
"Okay, I'm awake. How are you?"
"I'm not doing well, hence I called. How are you?"
"What's happened? Are the wife and kids okay?"
"They're fine. It's me that's the problem."
"Oh, what's happened to you? Did you hurt yourself?"
"I started smoking again."
"Oh."
"How insouciant. Do you not care at all that I'm sinning?"
"What strong terminology. I'm not sure if smoking is considered sinning," Deneo expresses with a light-hearted laugh.
"Well clearly you need to be clued up. If you look up Strong's concordance number 5333 (the Greek), the cognate 'pharmakos', which is a sorcerer, comes from the word pharmakon which is a drug. In archaic times sorcerers apparently used to give drugs to their clients in order to give them a false sense of transcendence above material reality. Smoking has a similar effect."
"Okay. Look at you mister! Taking everything so darn seriously. Thanks for the tip. So, I guess I should share some words of wisdom to help you stop?"
"You just don't give a d*mn, do you?" Lucky expresses disheartened. Deneo senses he's gloomy and she states emphatically "Of course I care. I love- I mean wow. Okay, I didn't mean to say that. I'm so far from that."
"Do you realise what you just did right there? You're making this about yourself. I really couldn't care less whether you loved me or not. I need you to counsel me!" Deneo laughs saying "Alright then. I need some time to think."
"You mean I should call later?"
"No need. I'm just trying to find the words... Or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way. I think a psychological probing will lead me to the problem more accurately?"
"Okay, I guess?" Lucky voices, seeming afraid.
"Don't be scared. I will not use anything said here against you at any point in time; I never record or post about our encounters, you know that right?"
"Is this a joke?"
"A terrible one, Deneo expresses and they share a hearty laugh.
"You allow me to censor, so I'm comfortable. I trust you," is Lucky's response.
