The canteen buzzed with the usual midday chatter as students grabbed lunch and shared the latest gossip. Alexis and Laura sat at a corner table, deep in conversation. Alexis leaned in, his voice low but earnest.
"You know, Laura, you should try making friends with more of our classmates," he suggested, glancing around the bustling room. "It might make things easier for you and your family."
Laura's golden eyes flickered with uncertainty. "I've never really thought about it. We've always kept to ourselves."
Alexis smiled, his sincerity shining through. "I know it's not easy, but you've got me. I'll be with you every step of the way."
Laura hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Okay, Alexis. I'll try."
A grin spread across Alexis's face. "Great! Let's start now."
He stood, gently taking Laura's hand. He felt the coolness of her skin but ignored the shiver it sent down his spine. Guiding her towards the table where Mia, Sam, Tyler, and Rachel were talking and eating, he felt a surge of optimism.
Mia glanced up, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched them approach. "Hey, everyone," Alexis greeted, pulling out a chair for Laura. "Mind if we join you?"
Mia's expression softened. "Of course not. Have a seat."
Laura sat down, looking a bit uncomfortable but determined. "Hi," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Tyler gave her a friendly smile. "Hey, Laura. Glad you could join us."
As the group continued their conversation, Laura gradually began to relax, even joining in occasionally. Alexis watched with satisfaction, feeling that this was a significant step for her.
Meanwhile, deep in the woods, three hunters roamed quietly, their eyes scanning the underbrush for any sign of movement. They spotted a family of deer grazing peacefully and began to take aim.
One of the hunters, a burly man named Hank, motioned for the others to spread out. "Let's surround them," he whispered.
Suddenly, a blur of movement rushed past them. Hank barely had time to react before a powerful force knocked him to the ground. He gasped, his eyes wide with shock as he saw the creature-an indistinct, fast-moving shape-before darkness claimed him.
The second hunter, Pete, turned, his rifle raised, but it was too late. The creature lunged, claws slashing through the air. He screamed as he fell, the sound echoing through the forest. The third hunter, Tom, tried to run, but the creature was faster, its fangs sinking into his neck with terrifying speed. The woods fell silent once more, the only sound the wind rustling through the trees.
The next morning, Sheriff Tom Walker stood with his deputy, Jenny Collins, examining the grisly scene. The bodies of the three hunters lay sprawled on the forest floor, their faces frozen in expressions of terror. Claw marks marred their torsos, and bite wounds dotted their limbs.
"This is brutal," Jenny said, her voice hushed. "What do you think did this, Sheriff?"
Sheriff Walker knelt beside one of the bodies, his face grim. "Looks like the work of wild animals. Wolves, maybe. A pack of them."
Jenny nodded, her expression thoughtful. "But wolves don't usually attack humans like this. It's strange."
"Strange or not, we need to warn the villagers," the sheriff replied, standing up. "Let's get this area secured and issue a warning."
By Saturday morning, Sheriff Walker and Deputy Collins were driving through Snowmass Village in their patrol car, a loudspeaker mounted on the roof. The sheriff's voice echoed through the streets, alerting everyone to the danger.
"Attention, everyone. We've had reports of wild animal attacks in the woods. Please avoid hunting or roaming in the woods alone until further notice. Stay safe."
Alexis heard the announcement as he finished his breakfast. His heart pounded with anxiety as he rushed outside to talk to the sheriff.
"Sheriff Walker!" he called out, running up to the patrol car. "What happened?"
The sheriff leaned out the window, his face serious. "Three hunters were found dead in the woods, Alexis. Looks like they were attacked by a pack of wolves."
Alexis breathed a sigh of relief, his worst fears momentarily assuaged. "Wolves?"
"That's our conclusion," the sheriff confirmed. "But we're taking every precaution. Just be careful out there."
"Thanks, Sheriff," Alexis said, feeling a mix of relief and lingering concern.
Later that day, Alexis found himself walking through the woods again, his mind racing. He needed to talk to Laura and her family, to make sure they were safe and to warn them about the increased vigilance.
As he approached the Ashford house, he saw Laura waiting for him on the porch. "Laura," he called out, jogging the last few steps.
"Alexis, what's wrong?" Laura asked, her eyes filled with worry.
"Three hunters were killed in the woods," Alexis said, his voice urgent. "The sheriff thinks it was a pack of wolves, but I needed to make sure you and your family are okay."
Laura's expression darkened. "We heard about the attacks. Don't worry, Alexis. It wasn't us."
"I believe you," Alexis replied, his relief palpable. "But please, be careful. The villagers are on high alert now."
Laura nodded. "We will. Thank you for looking out for us."
As the days passed, the villagers of Snowmass remained wary, heeding the sheriff's warning. Alexis continued to blend in with his classmates, maintaining his friendships while keeping the Ashfords' secret. The balance was delicate, but he was determined to protect those he cared about.
In the evenings, he often met with Laura, their bond growing stronger with each conversation. Despite the shadows lurking in the woods, they found solace in each other, their friendship a beacon of hope amidst the uncertainty.
And so, the quiet tension in Snowmass Village persisted, the truth about the Ashfords hidden beneath layers of caution and trust. Alexis knew that danger still loomed, but he was ready to face it, alongside his friends, whatever the cost.
