### Chapter 19: Boundaries of the Heart
After the hunt, the Ashford family took a much-needed break. Alexis and Laura found themselves alone in her room, a rare moment of tranquility amidst the chaos.
Laura was recounting a childhood memory, her voice a soothing balm in the stillness. "When we first moved to Snowmass Village, it felt like a fresh start. But adjusting was hard. Having my family around made all the difference."
Alexis nodded, though his mind was elsewhere. He couldn't help but be captivated by Laura's presence—the way her lips moved, the sparkle in her eyes, the way her hair fell gracefully around her shoulders. She noticed his gaze and paused, a slight blush creeping up her cheeks.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" she asked softly.
Without a word, Alexis leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips. Laura's eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly melted into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him closer. The kiss deepened, growing more passionate and urgent.
Alexis gently laid Laura down on the couch, hovering above her as their lips continued to explore each other. His hands cradled her face, while hers tangled in his hair, pulling him even closer. The intensity of their embrace grew, the world outside fading into oblivion as they lost themselves in the moment.
But before things could go any further, Laura abruptly pulled away, sitting up and moving to the corner of the room. Her breathing was heavy, her eyes filled with a mix of longing and fear.
"I'm sorry, Laura," Alexis said, sitting up and running a hand through his hair. "I didn't mean to..."
Laura shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "No, it's not your fault. I'm the one who should apologize. I couldn't stop myself because of the scent of your blood."
Alexis stood and moved towards her, but she held up a hand to stop him. "Laura, I trust you. I know you won't hurt me."
"It's not that simple, Alexis," she said, her voice trembling. "The scent of your blood is so intoxicating, it's like a drug. I don't want to risk losing control and hurting you."
He reached out and took her hand gently. "We'll figure this out together. I care about you, Laura. I'm not afraid."
Laura looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of doubt. Finding none, she took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay. But we need to be careful. For both our sakes."
Alexis pulled her into a hug, holding her close. "I understand. We'll take it one step at a time."
She rested her head on his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. "Thank you, Alexis. For being here. For understanding."
He kissed the top of her head. "Always."
After a few moments, they pulled away, and Laura led him downstairs to the living room. The rest of the Ashford family was scattered around, each engaged in their own form of relaxation.
Vlad glanced up from a book he was reading. "You two okay?"
Laura nodded. "Yes, we're fine."
Vlad added with a knowing smirk, "Looks like something happened between the two of you."
Alexis blushed slightly but met Vlad's eyes. "Just figuring things out."
Vlad chuckled. "Good. Just remember, we're here for you both. This isn't something you have to handle alone."
Brigette, who had been knitting by the fireplace, looked up. "Love is a powerful force, but it can be complicated for us. Be careful."
Selina, seated on the floor sorting through a stack of books, added, "We'll make sure Theron doesn't get anywhere near Alexis. But you two need to set boundaries. It's safer that way."
Laura nodded. "We understand. We'll be careful."
Vlad put down his book and stood up. "I'm going to check the perimeter. Just in case."
Cristoff, who had been silently observing, rose to join him. "I'll come with you."
As Vlad and Cristoff left the room, the atmosphere grew more relaxed. Alexis and Laura sat down on the couch, and the family fell into a comfortable silence, the weight of their recent battles momentarily lifted. Despite the looming threat of Theron, there was a sense of hope that they could face whatever came their way as long as they had each other.
The night stretched on, filled with quiet conversations and shared laughter. For a brief moment, the Ashford house felt like a sanctuary, a place where love and determination could conquer any fear. And as Alexis and Laura sat side by side, they knew that together, they could overcome anything.
