Nathan"UGH! I'm so stupid." I muttered to myself.
I ran my hand over the paper, dusting off the eraser bits. I completely ruined the cape I've been trying to sketch on my Batman. It's been taking me the majority of my lunch period and I still couldn't get it right.
At this point, I was going to ditch the whole sketch altogether. It's not even for a project.
"I don't know, I thought it was pretty good." A low and smooth voice startled me from over my shoulder. I peered up at a tall boy towering over me and the lunch table.
He was wearing a GORILLAZ black band t-shirt, with his hands stuffed into his pockets. I've never seen him around before and our high school was on the smaller size so that surprised me. He must be new. I would've noticed him before. His black hair hung longer than the preppy boys at our school and his blue piercing eyes were hard to miss.
I shook my head to shake off that unwarranted thought. Why was I noticing his eyes? Weird.
"Yeah, um...it's the cape. It's not flowing right and I've been working at it for hours." I huffed resuming what I was doing.
"Hm. I see what you mean," He was still standing over me analyzing the drawing. Frankly, I was finding it a little off putting. Who was this guy and why is he hovering over me?
"Sorry, did you need something?" I huffed, covering my paper with my arm. That came out a little meaner than I intended to but he didn't seem to notice. He quickly squeezed in and made himself home on the chair beside me.
"Nah, I just wanted to see what you were working on. The people at this school don't seem very artsy. Everyone here is a little..." He looked around. I understood immediately - he didn't even have to say it.
"Uptight." I finished. He exhaled dramatically.
"Yeah! Exactly! Up-fucking-tight." He laughed. I couldn't help but let out a small laugh too. He wasn't wrong. This was a preppy school and "creative" wasn't really what we were known for.
"If you're not throwing a football or on the honor roll, you're definitely an outcast here." I breathed, looking back down at my paper.
"Is that what you are? An outcast?"
I took a second to think about my answer. Whoever this kid was...I didn't want him to know how much of a loser I was considered here. I don't know why but something in me was keeping me from saying it out loud. No one really talked to me here and it was lonely at times. This quick conversation alone felt like coming up for air. I didn't even realize how badly I was drowning.
"I guess...I don't really fit in..." I muttered. I looked at him to gage his facial expression. He looked at me with a bright smile, instantly warming my cheeks.
"Well, than I guess I'm an outcast too. I'm not good in school and I can't throw a ball for shit." He laughed.
"Very true." I laughed back. I couldn't tell you when the last time I laughed like this. It was so simple but it felt monumental. He was so...different than anyone I ever knew.
Suddenly the bell rang, signaling for us to head to our next classes. He jumped from his chair and started heading for the door. I felt my stomach drop at the thought we were going to need to split up.
He suddenly stopped walking and turned back to me. He looked like a salmon swimming upstream through all the other teenagers.
"What's your name?" He called out.
"Nathan." I answered. "Yours?"
"Caleb...I'll see you next lunch, Nathan?" He gave me a simple up nod and I repeated his gesture.
He shook his black hair so it swept perfectly over his eyes before he turned and walked back to the doors.
It's been 3 years going to this awful school and I guess I just made my first friend.
