Taking the stairs in the building two at a time after having run past the bewildered people who had barely come to terms with what was going on, on the ground floor, Bang Chan kept running upwards. He heard someone's footsteps behind him but didn't slow down. He was just rounding the sign on the wall that said 'floor 20' when he heard Minho's half panted shout.
"WILL YOU WAIT UP...GOSH...GOSH DARN IT..."
Minho, who had just arrived at the landing for floor 16, came to a pause as he grabbed the railing. His lungs felt like they were about to explode. He lifted his head to look up at the stairwell to see that Bang Chan was still running and was close to the roof entrance at least 15-20 floors above him.
'Is he secretly some sort of triathlon athlete?' thought Minho, pushing off the railing he was holding on to in an attempt to start running again. He immediately regretted it when he felt his knees threaten to give out. Minho moved to grab the railing again to make sure he didn't collide with the tiles on the floor.
Bang Chan meanwhile had shouldered open the entrance to the roof on level 35, looking at the scene before him. A young man was currently standing near the lip of the building with his back to the entrance. He had a half empty bottle of Soju in one hand, another empty bottle of Soju resting on the rooftop itself. The empty bottle was on its side and was rattling about in a crude circle in the breeze as if playing a solo version of spin the bottle.
"I can't live with the guilt anymore...knowing it's my fault that you're an angel somewhere up there..." slurred the young man, gesturing his Soju bottle towards the sky only to make him teeter a bit. "I miss you so much...I can't do this anymore...."
Bang Chan hesitated by the door, not wanting to scare the man and make him fall to his death that way. He eventually decided that the best thing to do would be to slowly walk up behind him as the young man continued to talk to the sky.
"I always wanted a brother...my whole life I wanted one...when my mother remarried and I met you...I knew I got it. You were perfect. Everything I wanted or could hope for...I wanted the world to see that too...I wanted to immortalize you like the hero you were to me...you helped me out of my loneliness and I...when I immortalized you in my writing...I got you killed. I...it's my fault you're dead and I don't deserve to live because of that..."
He paused in his rambling to put the Soju bottle to his lips, bringing it down as he sloppily wiped the tears on his cheeks away.
"...It was an accident, they said...they tried to get me to believe it wasn't my fault...but I know the truth...I know if I had left well enough alone...if I had just been content enough with having a brother...you would still be here...you would..."
A sudden rush of wind then caused the young man to teeter forward, making Bang Chan walk faster towards him. He knew he had to do something and quick or this man would die.
"...Hey, um...excuse me," said Bang Chan as he came to a stop a few feet from the man. "Don't do it."
Bang Chan's sudden voice caused the young man to turn his attention from the sky to him. His eyes were glassy from intoxication, a small grin coming to his face as he stared at the masked man before him.
"Are you his angel?" the man asked as he used his hand to brush a strand of black hair out of his face that the wind had blown there. "You aren't real...you aren't..."
The door to the rooftop suddenly slammed open as Minho came onto the scene huffing and puffing more than the Big Bad Wolf when he couldn't get the brick house knocked down. The sudden appearance of yet another man on the roof caused the man to widen his eyes in shock.
"Do I get two angels to escort me?" asked the man as Minho looked up at him.
"We're not...we're not angels..." Minho panted out. "Just get off the ledge."
"You're not?" asked the man, turning his gaze back to Bang Chan again. "But you have to be...you have to be..."
Another gush of wind then caused the man to totter backwards. He was about to fall off the building, but Bang Chan lunged forward to grab him by the arm. It jerked him to a sudden stop and kept him from toppling completely off the roof. The solid grip on his arm made the man realize that Bang Chan was real, tears tripping down his face.
"You're...you're real?...You came to save me?"
Bang Chan couldn't understand what the man was blabbering on about, instead more focused on the moment on making sure he didn't fall to his death. He kept his firm grip on his arm as he dragged him backwards, Minho moving to help him out. Once the man was firmly on the roof, Bang Chan moved to stand in front of him so he wouldn't get near the edge again.
"You...you're real?" repeated the man as he moved to smush Bang Chan's cheeks. Tears rolled thick and heavy down his cheeks as he moved to hug Bang Chan as tight as possible.
Minho watched the scene before him confused. The intoxicated man looked familiar to him for some reason, but he had no idea why. All he was concerned with now was helping to pry his iron clad grip off Bang Chan.
"Hey...ease up," said Minho as he moved to grab one of the man's arms and pull back.
When he did, it caused Bang Chan to stumble off balance. He teetered backwards, flipping over the lip of the building. Minho immediately rushed to the edge and peered over to see Bang Chan anxiously gripping it with his fingers. There wasn't much of a ledge to hold to though, causing his fingers to slowly begin slipping off one by one. Laying down on his stomach, Minho leaned over the edge and extended a hand out towards Bang Chan.
"Grab my hand!" shouted Minho, trying to lean as close as he could without falling off himself.
The intoxicated man behind him began to be distressed all over again, moving to root both hands into his hair.
"Oh no! I'm killing him all over again! I can't...I can't breathe..."
Turning his head momentarily to look behind him, Minho glared at the man.
"Stop being an idiot and get over here and help me! He's not dead yet so stop acting like he is!"
Minho turned his attention back to Bang Chan to see the panic in his eyes. Minho continued to strain his hand down towards him.
"Just reach for it...Come on! I'm right here!"
Bang Chan shifted in an attempt to reach his hand up further, but in doing so, it caused his other hand to slip off the thin ledge. Minho's eyes widened in horror as he watched Bang Chan lose his grip completely and fall several stories to the ground below.
