Chapter 5: Dr. Daddy
It was the next day and it went pretty similar to yesterday, but we're going to the doctors for a physical check up instead. I wasn't as nervous for this one because it was just a regular check up and I knew nothing was really that wrong with me physically. The only thing that concerned me was the amount of pain I'm always in. I've always been a bit frail, but it's gotten worse with age. Now even doing some basic labour puts me in debilitating pain. And I'll have times where it feels like my joints are popping out of the sockets.
When we got to the hospital, it was the same drill as yesterday, but a little bit slower. This part of the hospital was a little busier than the mental health side, so it took a little longer for the doctor to come in. While waiting for the doctor I picked at the gauze that covered my right hand. The nurse had to take blood for my check up. I'm OK with needles as all the nurses I've ever been in contact with have been very nice and comforting.
When the doctor finally came in, I realised it was a male doctor and I had a mini freak out. I thought it would be another woman doctor like yesterday, but I know I can't pick and choose.
"This isn't the same man" I thought to myself with my eyes shut tight.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I startle you?" Said a very soothing voice. It felt as if cold water just rushed down my back and woke me up. I looked up in surprise at the doctor's face, only to freeze at the very handsome man who looked like honey personified. I realised that I was staring and looked in every direction, but his face and then put my head down in shame and embarrassment.
What I didn't notice is the way he freezed when we made eye contact.
"No need to be embarrassed, I tend to have that effect on most people." He chuckled. "My name is Dr. Cullen, it's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Swan."
I managed the courage to look up at his face one more time and really take in his features. He had eyes that matched his voice, looking like honey. His hair was almost gold in colour and was very neatly slicked back. He had a very gentle expression on his face and he was almost deathly pale.
"Doctor Daddy oh my Gods" I slapped my hand over my mouth before I could say it out loud. "Ow, that hurt. Good thing I stopped before I actually said that though." He didn't even say anything about my weird behaviour as we continued with the check up. It got easier to be around him as he kept up with the gentle personality. I felt a little calmer around him. Maybe it's because he's a doctor, so I should trust him? Either way it was nice to not be super anxious around a man.
When we got to the end of the appointment, he asked me "Is there anything else that you'd like to bring up before we are done here?"
"Umm, yeah. Is there time?" I asked.
"Of course! We got done a little early because you were so good." he said.
My entire body flushed at that, but we don't need to talk about that. I was so embarrassed that I didn't see the smile on his face.
I cleared my throat, "well I wanted to bring up my chronic pain. I've looked into it, and this doesn't seem normal."
"Yes, being in chronic pain isn't normal most of the time. Do you have any idea what could be causing this?" He asked.
"No clue. It's been like this for as long as I can remember. It has gotten worse in the last couple of years though. Sometimes it feels like my joints pop out of the sockets, and my joints hyperextend naturally. Like I can pop my hips and knees out of place on command, and I can bend my joints backwards and stuff." I said.
I explained more of my symptoms to him and he listened attentively. It was nice to feel listened to.
"Well it sounds like a connective tissue disorder. Let me see if I can find the exact disorder..." He said trailing off "hm, looks like Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. The nurse will get another blood sample and see if we can narrow it down to a specific type of EDS."
"Thank you." I said gratefully.
"Of course. You'll get a call from our office when we have the results." He said and gave me a smile before leaving the room.
The nurse came back in a minute later and got another blood sample from me before I was led out to the lobby. Dad and I soon left to go back home.
"Are you doing OK, Li?" He asked.
"Yeah. They just took a lot of blood, so I'm a little tired. I'll probably head to bed early." I replied.
"Let's get you something to eat first.
How about pizza?" He asked again.
"Yeah, that sounds good." I grinned.
We got home and dad ordered a pizza. I went upstairs to my room to grab my diamond painting things. I brought them downstairs to the kitchen table and got started working on it. This one was a little sign that said, 'must be approved by cats'. I've been thinking of starting a little shop doing these for people. But I wasn't sure how it would sell.
As I got more into the zone, I didn't realise when the door had been knocked on. Dad grabbed the pizza and set it on the counter behind me. I finally came out of my hyperfixation when I smelled the food.
Dad and I ate together on the couch and watched an episode of cops. After we were done eating I took my things back to my room and went to bed.
