EVERYONE REMEMBERED the 68th Hunger Games. It was one of the rare times the Gamemaker had an unusual concept, instead of a forrest or ruined city, it was what they called Western themed. Its terrain was rocky, cracked, and a blistering heat hung over the tributes day and night. Their forms of shelter came from the shacks and saloons scattered around them. The tribute's attire that year was unique too, long white dresses for the girls, and a white shirt and pants for the boys, both of which were allowed cowboy hats. The mutts that year had been lizards and snakes, their scales shiny and rainbow, but deadly, if one got too close. When it got slow they brought out the beasts, rampant horses that shrieked out neighs mixed with the cries of fallen tributes. The boy from our district, Xander, thirteen, was trampled to death when he thought he heard his parents crying out for him.

LUX BEAUMONT wasn't supposed to win that year, before the game started, the most people spoke about the girl from five was what she wore in her chariot and interview. Whoever had designed her outfits did not have Lux's comfort or dignity in mind. When the game started, I remember Lux and her teammate, Apollo, a boy a year older and double her weight, splitting up immediately. He checked she had food, water and a weapon, then left her. The two didn't meet again until it was down to the final five. It was a moment of tension and dread; ending with bloodied hands and choked back sobs.

THE FINAL kill was, for the most part, bloodless. It was a death filled with clashing jaws, foamed lips, a meek cry of strength, and a cracking of bone. Twelve watched in an unwavering silence as Lux Beaumont, previously dubbed The Beacon of District Five, won the 68th Hunger Games.
