Noah's POV
"Here's your change." I spoke softly as I handed the three nickels to the person in front of me. I spend all my days in this stupid convenience store, wasting away my life. But what else could I do?
"You did your math wrong." Toby chuckled from the snack section.
"No I fucking didn't." I scoffed. "Why are you here anyway?"
"Thanksgiving break." They told me. I actually didn't mind the company of Toby, especially since Jayden was hanging out with Diana for the day and couldn't come to work.
I was not currently on Thanksgiving break, I much had to be in school right now. Toby is just on break because she goes to this private school. Almost all of us go to different schools. I got to the same school as Ava, Brielle, and Jayden, but Jayden does also go to this other religious school type place when they get out of their regular school, and Nyx is currently enrolled in college.
Most of the people in the house don't make it for a full week of school, and Stella didn't mind, just as long as you tell her.
But I did not.
This was probably the first time I hadn't told her I was ditching school, and I had a deep feeling in my stomach that I was going to be yelled at when I get home. But I know that whenever Stella yells at one of us, she is really just trying to look out for us.
"Hey Noah, do you want to come over to my apartment after your shift? We can mow the grass." Daniel spoke, which meant we can go smoke weed.
And of course, I had to accept the offer.
"Yeah sure, do you think I could just stop by my house after to grab something?" I asked, watching as Toby opened a bag of Lays potato chips. I sighed and smiled.
"Sure, man."
My shift was now over, and I was walking home with Toby.
"What do you want to do when you get older?" They asked me, trying to balance their body on the sidewalk rim.
"I'm not sure. I might join the army." I told them. People usually join the army to find out who they are, plus I would love to serve for my country.
"Why the hell would you join the army?" They snickered.
"I mean what the fuck am I supposed to do? I'm a seventeen year old boy in west Philly working at a convenience store with my sister."
"Just work at the convenience store."
"Yeah fuck no." I laughed, walking up to the porch of the house, using my key to open the door. I walked inside, tossing my bag on the couch where Stella was sitting. She signaled me to be quiet by putting her index finger on her lips. It was because Brielle was on a Zoom call with her therapist.
I watched the mute Sesame Street on the television, wondering why the fuck I was watching this with my 24 and 3 year old sisters.
"Can we watch something else?" I whisper.
