I was flooded with questions.
Why had the werewolves attacked this village? What did they want with Era?
And who exactly was Xenon? Who was the man with him? Based on their powers, they seemed like elementals, but why were they allied with the werewolves?
What in the world was truly happening here?
As Ansel guided me to the meeting place, I hoped I was finally about to get some answers.
His fingers were tightly interlaced with mine, pulling me along. I had tried to pull my hand away earlier, but he wouldn't let go. His grip was firm, almost desperate.
He had been acting strangely since morning, refusing to leave my side for even a second, as if he feared I might vanish into thin air.
Sighing, I followed him silently, knowing there was no point in arguing.
When we finally reached our destination, I stared at the large wooden doors in front of us as Ansel pushed them open. The soft murmur from inside instantly ceased, and all eyes turned to us. It seemed everyone was here, waiting.
As we walked, I let my gaze wander around the room. The meeting space resembled a cozy study, with a sturdy wooden desk at its center, surrounded by leather sofas and lined with bookshelves overflowing with books.
As we approached, my attention was immediately drawn to Mason, who lounged comfortably on one of the sofas. Directly opposite him, across the table, sat Ezra, Genesis, and an unfamiliar man. Standing just behind them were Kyler and Noel.
The sight of Noel took me by surprise; this was only my second encounter with him.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Lily standing a couple of steps behind Mason's sofa, flanked by the same two men who had accompanied her earlier.
I settled onto the sofa next to Ansel and attempted to withdraw my hand from his firm grasp, but he only tightened his hold.
I shot him a glare from the corner of my eye—it wasn't as though I could disappear with so many eyes upon us. His clinginess puzzled me. Why was he acting this way now?
"Before we start the meeting, I think you should see this," Mason said, leaning forward and directing his words at Ansel. He passed a piece of paper across the table. "We found this on one of my men this morning. They killed him and left this on his body at the border."
Ansel's expression darkened as he read the message. His jaw tightened, and he crumpled the paper into his fist.
I didn't have to wait long to learn what was written, as Mason continued speaking. "They want the body of their Alpha back, along with the person who killed him," he said gravely, causing my stomach to drop. "This is their condition for negotiation, or they will launch a full-fledged attack on the village."
My hand trembled slightly, but Ansel's thumb brushed gently over my knuckles, offering a silent assurance that he wouldn't let anything happen to me.
"There will be no negotiation," Ansel declared, his voice dark and resolute, leaving no room for argument. His eyes fixed on Mason. "I'm sure you don't want to sit and talk with the people who took so many innocent lives in your village."
Mason's expression was equally cold. "No negotiation," he agreed with a nod.
"They refused to take the bodies of their warriors but want that psychopath back, huh?" Kyler scoffed from his position behind the unfamiliar man.
"It must be Mateo, Michael's younger brother," the unfamiliar man said. He looked slightly older than Ansel, with pale blue eyes and jet-black hair. "He took the position of Alpha of the Eclipse Pack after that bastard's death."
