A few days after Auntie and Rami's visit, I received an unexpected invitation. It was from Jungkook's office, inviting spouses to a company event. When Jungkook mentioned it to me, I was reluctant. But he assured me it would be a good opportunity to see where he worked and to meet his colleagues.
The day of the event, I dressed in a simple but elegant dress, not wanting to draw too much attention. Jungkook looked handsome in his suit, and as we left the apartment, I couldn't help but notice how many women would probably be staring at him tonight. The thought made me uncomfortable, but I brushed it aside.
As we arrived at the office building, Jungkook guided me through the lobby, introducing me to his colleagues. The women were especially attentive, their eyes lingering on him in a way that made my stomach churn. I had always known that Jungkook was handsome, but seeing the way these women looked at him, I realized just how much they wanted him. Not just for his looks, but for his wealth and status too.
We entered a large conference room filled with people. Jungkook kept a protective hand on my back as we made our way through the crowd. He introduced me to a group of his female co-workers, who smiled politely but whose eyes held a different story. I could see the jealousy and curiosity in their gazes.
"Jisoo, this is Mina, Sooyoung, and Hyejin," Jungkook said, gesturing to the three women.
"Nice to meet you all," I said, forcing a smile.
"So, you're the lucky one who got Jungkook," Mina said, her tone sweet but with an edge of bitterness.
I nodded, not sure how to respond. "Yes, I guess so."
The conversation was awkward, filled with subtle jabs and veiled compliments. Jungkook stayed close to me, sensing my discomfort. After a while, we moved on, but the unease remained.
As we mingled, I noticed a group of male co-workers eyeing me. One of them, a tall man with a confident swagger, approached us.
"Hey there, I'm Taehyun," he said, extending his hand. "And you must be the lovely wife."
I shook his hand, trying to keep my composure. "Yes, I'm Jisoo."
"You're even more beautiful than Jungkook described," he said, his eyes lingering on me a little too long.
Jungkook stepped in, his expression firm. "Jisoo, this is my colleague, Taehyun."
Taehyun smiled, not bothered by Jungkook's tone. "Nice to meet you, Jisoo. If you ever get bored of Jungkook, you know where to find me."
I forced a laugh, pulling my hand away. Jungkook's grip on my shoulder tightened, and we moved away from Taehyun. I could feel Jungkook's tension, and it made me anxious.
As the evening went on, more men tried to approach me. Some were polite, others more forward. One man, in particular, seemed determined to get my attention. He was tall, with sharp features and an air of arrogance. His name was Seokjin, and I quickly learned that he was Jungkook's rival at work.
"Jisoo, right?" Seokjin said, stepping in close. "I've heard so much about you."
"Nice to meet you," I said, trying to keep my distance.
"Jungkook's a lucky man," he said, his eyes roaming over me. "But luck can change."
I frowned, not liking his insinuation. "I'm happy with Jungkook."
Seokjin chuckled, unfazed. "We'll see about that."
Before I could respond, he reached out to touch my arm. I recoiled, stepping back, but he followed. Jungkook appeared by my side in an instant, his face a mask of anger.
"Get your hands off her," Jungkook growled.
Seokjin smirked. "Just being friendly, Jungkook."
"She's my wife," Jungkook said, his voice low and dangerous. "Stay away from her."
Seokjin laughed, but there was no humor in it. "You're too possessive, Jungkook. It's not attractive."
Before I knew it, Jungkook had thrown a punch. Seokjin staggered back, clutching his jaw. The room went silent as everyone turned to watch. Seokjin recovered quickly, retaliating with a punch of his own. Chaos erupted as the two men fought, their colleagues rushing to pull them apart.
"Stop it, both of you!" I shouted, my voice trembling with fear.
Finally, Jungkook's friends managed to separate them. Jungkook had a cut on his lip, and Seokjin's eye was already swelling. Jungkook's gaze was fixed on Seokjin, pure fury in his eyes.
"This isn't over," Seokjin spat, wiping blood from his mouth.
Jungkook ignored him, turning to me. "Let's go."
We left the office, Jungkook's arm around me protectively. His grip was gentle but firm, as if he was afraid I might disappear. We walked to the car in silence, the night air cool against my skin. Jungkook had bruises forming on his face and knuckles, and my heart ached at the sight.
When we reached the car, he opened the door for me, then got in himself. As we drove home, I could feel the weight of the evening pressing down on us. The admiration and jealousy from his female colleagues, the unwelcome advances from the men, and the fight with Seokjin—it was all too much.
"I'm sorry, Jisoo," Jungkook said quietly, breaking the silence.
"It's not your fault," I replied, my voice soft. "You were just protecting me."
He sighed, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. "I hate that you had to go through that. I should have been more careful."
I reached out, placing my hand on his arm. "It's okay. I'm just glad we're leaving."
When we arrived home, Jungkook parked the car and turned to me. His eyes were filled with guilt and concern.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
I nodded, though I felt far from alright. "I'll be fine. Let's just go inside."
We entered the apartment, and Jungkook immediately went to the bathroom to clean up his wounds. I followed him, grabbing a first aid kit from the cabinet.
"Sit down," I said, gesturing to the toilet seat.
He sat, and I carefully cleaned the cuts on his face. He winced slightly as I applied antiseptic, but didn't complain.
"Thank you," he murmured, his eyes fixed on mine.
I nodded, focusing on my task. "You should be more careful. I don't like seeing you hurt."
"I'll be fine," he said, though his eyes betrayed his pain. "I'm more worried about you."
I sighed, finishing up and putting the first aid kit away. "Let's just get some rest. It's been a long day."
Jungkook nodded, standing up. "Goodnight, Jisoo."
"Goodnight," I replied, heading to my room.
As I lay in bed, the events of the day played over in my mind. The looks from Jungkook's female colleagues, the advances from the men, Seokjin's arrogance, and Jungkook's protectiveness—it was all a lot to process. I realized that despite everything, Jungkook truly cared for me, even if I couldn't yet return his feelings.
But one thing I knew for sure, I pitied him until I figured out how far he can go for the sake of love.
