The next morning, I woke up to the sound of light footsteps in the kitchen. I stretched, feeling the residual tension from the previous night's events still clinging to me. I dressed quickly and headed out to see Jungkook already up, making coffee.
"Good morning," he said, offering me a tentative smile despite the bruises marring his face.
"Morning," I replied, my eyes lingering on his injuries. "How are you feeling?"
"I'll be fine," he said, brushing it off. "I'm more worried about you."
"I'm okay," I said, though my mind was still reeling from everything that had happened.
We were sitting down to breakfast when the doorbell rang. Jungkook stood up to answer it, and moments later, I heard my mother's voice.
"Jungkook! What happened to your face?" her voice was filled with horror.
I tensed, knowing she would want answers. Jungkook led her into the living room, where she immediately rushed over to inspect his bruises more closely.
"My goodness, who did this to you?" she demanded, her eyes wide with concern.
Jungkook hesitated, glancing at me before answering. "It was a colleague, Auntie. We had a disagreement at a work event."
My mother's gaze shifted to me, and I could see the worry in her eyes. "A disagreement? What kind of disagreement could lead to this?"
Jungkook sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It was about Jisoo. One of my colleagues was being inappropriate, and I couldn't stand by and let it happen."
My mother gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Oh, Jungkook! I can't believe this. You got hurt protecting my daughter."
He nodded, a small smile playing on his lips despite the pain. "Of course, Auntie. I would do anything to keep Jisoo safe."
Tears welled up in my mother's eyes as she reached out to hug him gently. "Thank you, Jungkook. Thank you for taking care of her. I don't know what I would do if something happened to her."
I stood there, feeling a mix of emotions. Seeing Jungkook and my mother like this made me realize how much he had done for me, even though our marriage was far from perfect.
"Jisoo, come here," my mother said, pulling me into the hug. "You have a good man here. You need to appreciate him."
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "I know, Mom."
We all sat down in the living room, and my mother insisted on hearing the full story. Jungkook recounted the events of the previous night, leaving out no details. My mother's eyes widened with each word, her face a mix of shock and gratitude.
"I can't believe someone would do that," she said, shaking her head. "And you fought him off to protect Jisoo. You're truly a blessing, Jungkook."
He smiled, though it was strained. "I just did what anyone would do."
"Not everyone would have the courage," my mother said, patting his hand. "You have my deepest gratitude."
Jungkook's expression softened, and he glanced at me. "I'm just glad Jisoo is safe."
After a while, my mother went into the kitchen to make tea, leaving Jungkook and me alone in the living room. The silence between us was heavy, filled with unspoken words and emotions.
"Jisoo," Jungkook said softly, breaking the silence. "I meant what I said. I would do anything to protect you."
"I know," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you."
