Xiao woke up with a severe headache, groaning in pain as she opened her eyes wearily.
The intensity of the pain in her head was overwhelming.
"Oww....." She murmured quietly as she rubbed her temple.
"Couldn't sleep?" Someone asked worriedly from the edge of the bed.
Xiao blinked in surprise and lifted her head slightly, only to see her best friends Pennie, Topaz, and Kate standing there.
"Guys?" She asked, her voice raspy and hoarse.
Topaz's amphibious lips curled upwards. "Yeah. How you feelin'."
"Like crap.." Xiao groaned. "I got a major headache."
"I'll go get some Ibuprofen." Pennie offered, moving towards the dresser beside Xiao's bed.
"Thanks." Xiao replied, gratefully.
Topaz frowned, noticing Xiao still appeared saddened. "Are you still not over what happened yesterday?"
"What?" Xiao asked, her brow furrowing.
"Y'know, about Flora?" Topaz asked simply.
Xiao sat up abruptly, turning her head towards her pig demon friend. "Oh, that." She murmured, running a hand through her hair.
"I've honestly completely forgotten about that whole situation." She admitted. "Almost."
"Wow, really?" Pennie asked, shocked. "I guess the sleepover helped after all." She commented as she gave Xiao an Ibuprofen tablet and a glass of water.
Xiao smiled and took the pill before drinking the water greedily.
"Told you." Kate said smugly.
"Yeah," Xiao half smiled. She wanted to tell her friends about Sam, but she wasn't sure on how they'd react.
Also, it probably would be best not to tell her Dad's either.
Suddenly, the bedroom door creaked open, revealing Xiao's father, Red Son. "Good morning kids."
Xiao and her friends exchanged greetings with big smiles on their faces.
Red Son's eyes lit up as he approached Xiao's friends. "Are you all well rested for the day?"
"Well, most of us are." Pennie interjected, "Xiao has a headache."
"Oh dear. What happened?" Red Son asked Xiao directly, with a look of concern etched on his face.
"I only just woke up with it, Father. Nothing serious," Xiao reassured him, feeling grateful for his attention.
"Well, take some Ibuprofen." Red Son suggested, his voice gentle. "I'll go make breakfast."
"Already took a tablet. And thanks," Xiao replied sincerely as she tried to get up.
Later that beautiful morning, the four close friends leisurely made their way to school, following their usual routine.
"I still can't seem to spot Bao anywhere," Pennie pointed out with a hint of frustration in her voice as she scanned the entire school area, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
Kate rolled her eyes, a gesture that clearly conveyed her exasperation. "Looks like he skipped school again," She grumbled with a tinge of annoyance in her voice.
Her disappointment was evident, highlighting the recurring behavior.
Xiao assured them, also scanning the area, "I'm sure he'll turn up sooner or later." Despite her efforts, she wasn't actively searching for Bao.
"I wonder why he's been skipping school more than usual?" Topaz asked curiously.
"Yes, I'm wondering that too, Topaz." Kate agreed. "It's certainly a mystery worth solving." She concluded, smiling.
Pennie gave out an anxious laugh. "Come on, let's get to class." Pennie suggested.
Soon the school bell rang and all of the students began walking into the building.
As soon as our main quad got into homeroom, Xiao spotted Flora sitting in her usual seat at the front of the class.
Xiao walked hurriedly past her desk, avoiding eye contact.
"Xiao." Flora called softly.
Xiao continued walking, keeping her head down.
Flora watched her intently as her frown deepened.
"I guess she's still pretty upset with you." Pennie said sadly, standing next to Flora's desk.
"I don't blame her." Flora said with a sad expression.
"Just give her time. I'm sure she'll wanna talk, eventually." Pennie comforted her.
"Yeah, I hope so." Flora replied.
And with that said, Pennie led the rest of her friends to their seats.
A few minutes later, everyone settled in their seats. They quickly took their seats as their homeroom teacher, Mr. Yang Shi, walked into class.
Yang Shi is a Hybrid with reptilian-like features.
His skin is a light brown color and he doesn't look much different from an ordinary human with his pale mint green hair and jade green eyes.
Although he looks young, he's actually quite old, probably in his late 40's.
Yang Shi cleared his throat. "Sssettle down class." He announced as he sat down on his chair. "We will begin today's lesson with some History revision."
His announcement was met with a chorus of groans.
Yang Shi chuckled in amusement before continuing.
"Don't worry, I'm just going to ask some simple questions about what you learned in your history class last week. So please listen carefully." He ordered in an intimidating tone.
Everyone obediently nodded.
"Good." Yang Shi cleared his throat again. "Now, who can tell me what year the First Opium War started?" He asked, scanning the classroom for any volunteers.
All of the pupils were quiet and did not utter a word in response.
Yang Shi then pointed at Xiao, who was peacefully doodling in her notebook, and he addressed her with a gentle tone, saying, "Miss Huo."
Xiao stared back at him with a confused expression on her face. "Me?" She questioned, feeling slightly nervous.
Yang nodded and replied, "Yes, you."
Xiao gulped and cleared her throat before stating, "Uh...Ahem. The First Opium War began in 1839, and Great Britain won that war in 1842."
"Very good," Yang said, nodding in approval.
Xiao smiled sheepishly before returning her gaze to her notebook, continuing to doodle.
