"I just wish you were coming with mom, I literally can't stand raven!" the girl let out a huff as her mom stood behind her in the mirror

deja was trying to her daughters hair, but couldn't as the girl kept moving her head from being annoyed she had to attend midsummers

especially because the teen had to go with her dad and stepmom. though the girl would have john b there with, she wanted her mom

the woman who birthed her, taught her manners, laughed with her, played imaginary games, cried the first diagnosis, and raised her to be the girl she is should be there

it was her last midsummers for crying out loud

couldn't her boss just let deja enjoy the day with her daughter? guess not

"honey i know. you have no idea how much i wish i could be there but you'll be with your dad, raven and most importantly the pogues. you're in good hands."

deja tried to cheer the seventeen year old up but immediately after the woman went quiet she received the biggest glare

azariah snorted, fixing her mom with a glare in the mirror. "i'm supposed to be excited about going with him, are you serious? he barely talks to me unless it's to lecture me and raven? She doesn't even look at me."

she loudly huffed "really mom. your boss knows what's going on she could've given you this one night!"

the girl rolled her eyes at the talk of her stepmother

"baby i understand i do, but there's nothing I can't do so just try to stay by john b." at the end she nudged her daughter teasingly

deja looked at her daughters eyes through the mirror so she could feel the impact "i get it i do. but you're stronger than them riah and when tonight is over you'll come back and we can laugh about how bad the food was or how weird the kooks acted. okay?"

her mom add on one last thing "and you can tell me how much fun you and john b had making the younger barlowe blush. once she felt the last bobby bin in her hair she turned to face her mom

the teen wanted to hold on to her annoyance about her mom not attending but melted under the warmth of her words. she sighed leaning forward to hug her tightly "thanks mom, for doing my hair but also for just.....everything."
she smiled and gave her a hug

"thank you mom" her voice was soft as she cherished the hairstyle

deja kissed her daughter's forehead, holding her close. "always, baby. now let me finish before zion gets here cuz lorddd we know how impatient that man is"
